@antipodean said in 2016-2017 provincial & club sevens:

I suppose you have to sart somewhere. At least there is a competition.

It was a pilot event with the intention it will be the real deal next year. Originally the US, Fijians and Sri Lankan Unions were to send their full boys and girls sides but the lead-in time was ultimately too short. NZR have also given it their blessing but didn't have enough time to fully sanction their own selections.

In addition to those unions, England, Wales and Japan have asked to be included on next year's plans.

Most likely there will be events on successive weekends with two North Island provincial unions keen to host either tournament.

Player Of The Tournament Siave Togoiu is some talent. He's a leaguie though and will likely stay in that code. Playing for Southern Cross Campus in 1B isn't going to see you fall in love with Union. But geez he's electric: ankle-breaking footwork, decent pace and one of those players that's never really tackled.

A shame the Warriors withdraw Etene Nanai from the NZ team. They're obviously getting very nervous about the Chiefs looking into a way to break his U20s contract. Apparently they're wanting Nanai to flag his final year at St Kents and will offer him a full NRL contract to train full time with the Warriors.

    @Wurzel
Popped along to the World sevens tournament yesterday at sacred heart college,Siave Togoiu was sensational, his acceleration, not to mention his left foot step is sensational, this kid in my opinion would be a waste in league,in the same way we see, someone like Tuavasa Sheck, used as a bring the ball back battering ram,can you imagine Sheck given space on the outside channels in union, where tries can be scored anywhere on the paddock..?,can see Togoiu doing the same thing..going to the Warriors is hardly pre requisit to successful career choice for a young footballer..!

@Stargazer This also explains his ommision from the NZu20 trial camp. Didn't realise due to visa requirements he had to stand down for 3 years after finishing school etc

All teams (but one) have now been named for the Nationals. Good to see that so many All Blacks and Black Ferns 7s players have been released to play this weekend!

The games on field 1 will probably be the games that will be shown on Sky Sport 2. If you happen to be there, and watching games on Field 2, would you be so kind to give the Fern your impressions and the scores?

I'm really looking forward to watching this tournament. NZ's best sevens talent (old dogs and puppies) will be on show and the fact that contracts can be earned for the NZ7s teams, makes it all the more interesting.

Looks like Auckland are going to be playing wingers in the forwards. Not sure if that is good or bad.

Good to see young Mosese Pepa in there. Kid is a stud.

Would've liked to have seen Caleb Clarke and Sione Havili in the team. They were both in the training squad, so I'm not sure if they're injured or just left out.

Also would've liked to have seen Niven Longopoa in there. He wasn't in the training squad, but he's made for this form of the game. He was good for Suburbs in the club 7s, but was playing in the U20's comp, rather than the men's comp.

Apparently, Sky will televise the games at field 1 LIVE and those at field 2 delayed.

Mason Emerson could be the rapid, live-wire speedster the NZ team have been missing for the last few seasons.

@Kiwidom It does seem strange that Reece can play for NZ Schools but not the NZ U20s - both are national teams.

The good thing is that he is happy to wait for his chance.
