    @mariner4life On a Thursday night ...

Shouldn't the opening game be something like Hurricanes vs. Waratahs?

The first game is generally an all-kiwi affair, which instantly lifted everything.

I don't understand the Thursday night start, especially with a home Rebels game, against a side who hasn't played finals in a decade.

There are always these articles at the start of the season about 'players to watch'. Most of them are hastily written space fillers written with one hand on google.

I rate Sumo though as someone who really does ask around, is respected by the coaches and manages to get a bit of insight about players. Here is his version of 'who to watch'

Five rising stars to keep an eye on this Super Rugby season

Five rising stars to keep an eye on this Super Rugby season

With Super Rugby set to kick off for 2017, Scotty Stevenson picks some rising stars in the New Zealand squads who could light up the competition this season.

Sad news: Richie Mo'unga is out for six to eight weeks with a broken hand.

    Dagg to 10?

Just thought I'd beat @ACT-Crusader to it 😉

Their only good ten. The thought of Marty McKenzie at ten ... 😱

Edit: Bateman could have covered if he hadn't been out for a month himself. So they only have McKenzie and Hunt.

It's only taken you five years to catch on, but better late than never...

Real shame about Richie. He looked a lot more assured on the weekend than anything I saw last season.

That's torn things early for Razor. Probably the person we could least afford to get injured - maybe along with Owen Franks.

Step up Mitchell Hunt, because I can't see us winning many with Marty McKenzie at the helm.

It was certainly a weak point in the squad recruitment.

@Crucial To be fair, I can't think of anyone better they could have signed as a first five. At least they cut Volavola.

Mitchell Karpik has re-signed with the Chiefs through until the end of the 2019 season.

We don't have a TRC thread yet and it's a little early for one so I'll post this here as it Super Rugby and Test Rugby in the republic still have a relevance together.

I thought the Crusaders really missed Fonatia's lack of pace in the weekend...

New Zealand teams will wear special jerseys this weekend, which will be worn when facing the Lions later this year.
