@Mokey Can I be happy La La Land didn't win the best movie award (despite the fuck-up at the presentation)?

That Oscar fuck up looked hilariously awkward.

Is it just me or are there a shitload more classic movies that *haven't * won Oscar's than those who have?

There was an article in the SST about the process to determine the winners and what happens at the ceremony. I assume these 2 PWC accountants fucked up and gave Bonnie and Clyde the wrong envelope.

Moonlight is a deserving winner (once they got around to it). I watched it a few nights ago and it is excellent.

I watched Manchester by the Sea last night and thought to myself it would be a tragedy if Affleck didn't win. An excellent portrayal of his character that kicks you right in the guts.

Having the wrong envelope is such a simple mistake. So simple that one might even suspect the whole thing was staged. Great way to get people talking about the oscars... 🙂

The whole Oscars crew and attendees must have been so busy readying their anti-Trump speeches that they fucked up the big moment.

Wank-fest goes wrong, can't produce money shot.

    Jack Reacher Never Go Back.

Tom Cruise isn't big enough. But he does not a bad effort at trying to get the character from the books. But he's still not big enough.

Thought the movie adaptations was quite shit, honestly. There was no way they were going to match the book endings, that's just not hollywood. But to move around the scenes they did, was just frustration. The guy that played Colonel Morgan couldn't act his way out of a paper bag either. So yes, I know it's bog standard to say the movie isn't as good as the book ... but it really wasn't, it just really wasn't.

2 guys that are far to small to play Jack Reacher out of 5 hungover guys on a plane watching the movie.

    Z for Zachariah

Another one on the free Stan pass.

    Margot Robbie - tick
    Chiwetel Ejiofor - tick
    Chris Pine - tick
    Shot in NZ - tick
Somewhat different to the novel - tick

See, I read the novel in High School and thought it was fucked. Mainly because I don't understand the angst of a young, lonely girl like @MN5 does.

This was actually quite a good watch. I've seen reviews call it a bit slow paced but I think it has a meter to it that draws you through each stage of the movie quite nicely.

    :::

Doesn't really bother going into detail about what happened. No fucking hope that anyone else is alive and/or could find the valley where they'll probably grow old and die or produce a bunch of offspring that eventually become inbred (perfect for West Virginia, I might add).

    :::

4 out of 5 lonely hillsides in Banks Peninsula

EDIT: and I really liked the last song blending from the organ music through to the strings. Might try to locate that one and play it on loop.

@NTA I watched that a few years back and enjoyed it too. It was interesting to see Margot Robbie in a very different, understated role.

I hadn't read the book so wasn't aware that Chris Pine's character was created for the movie until after watching the movie.

    spoilers still broken 😞

Yeah I watched this a while back, pretty decent film.

Like you, I am a sucker for post apocalyptic films...have a look for Hidden, I really liked it for a low budget film.

@Bovidae I'm extremely happy as La La Land was so overrated and I'm sick of hearing people wank on about how good it is. But as I wrote earlier it's a pretty average year for best film nominees. Moonlight was a good film but in another year it wouldn't have broken through. It's not a better film than say Fruitvale Station which couldn't break through at the Oscars when it was released a few years back.

@antipodean I haven't seen Fences yet so not sure if Affleck's performance was better than Denzel but I think it was much better than Gosling and Garfield (who was better in Silence than Hacksaw Ridge), although Mortensen was brilliant in Captain Fantastic, but he was never going to win for that.

Anyway, finally got round to seeing Lincoln this weekend. The first role I've liked Day Lewis in since The Boxer. He must have gone kosher for the entirety of the filming.

@Nepia Only 6 wins from 14 nominations so not the certainty many were expecting.

I really enjoyed Captain Fantastic. Loved the two youngest kids and Mortensen was very good.

Speaking of Fences, I wonder if the academy copped out by not including Viola Davis in the best actress category. That would have made the decision much more interesting.

I'll add most of the best picture nominees on my list of movies to watch, except La La Land. 😉

I think this was probably the strongest year in film this century. So many good films. I think of the 2015 films only Room and Spotlight probably would have deserved a nomination. The Revenant probably did as well but that film wasn't very enjoyable (for me).

La La Land or Moonlight I really don't think you could go wrong.
