To combine two conversation / reviews ...

Even though he's a bit old these days, I reckon Neeson would have fucking nailed Jack Reacher. 1.93m vs Cruise 1.7m

Agreed @MajorRage. My better half and I are big fans of the books having read them all and when we heard that Tom Cruise of all actors was going to play him, we both let out a very loud "BOOO!"

Totally the wrong choice for Jack Reacher. Reacher is supposed to be somewhere around 6'4" and around 240 lbs depending on which book you read as it has varied over the years.

We then spent some time trying to figure out who would make a better "Reacher".

Certainly, Liam Neeson was a good candidate but unfortunately yes, he is getting a bit too old for that type of role and didn't have the musculature required.

Someone we both thought would have been a good "Reacher" was Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman. He is tall, muscular and that similar strong silent type he plays with Wolverine (but without the Adamantium skelaton and claws).

Otherwise, there really is a dirth of tall musular actors who really fit the Reacher of the books.

We haven't watched either of the movies because neither of us can really stand Tom Cruise anyway and certainly not as one of our favorite characters from the book world.

Funnily, I don't know if anyone else here is a fan of the "Mitch Wrapp" books but Tom Cruise would fit that character much better than he does Reacher!

@MN5 Just for you. One of my favourite lines in a movie:

It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. Take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna have.

No ... I meant Neeson would have been a better choice to play Reacher in the movies. He would have nailed the part.

Ditto, a great line and delivered with typical Clint Eastwood laconic style in one of the better Western movies ever!
Also filmed in my old stomping grounds in Alberta on the outskirts of Calgary.

My niece made us watch "Edge of Seventeen" at the weekend. I relay didn't want to see a teenage angsty coming of age movie, especially one billed as the successor to th John Hughes 80s brat pack flicks. But it was genuinely funny and cleverly written. Woody Harrelson steals the show as a dry as fuck teacher. Great soundtrack too.

My pick for Reacher was Liev Schreiber . I thought Cruise was pretty good though.

@jegga yeah having not read the books, but heard all the angst at his casting (didnt Cruise by the movie rights to all the books?) I watched them and enjoyed them for what they were.

When you are Tom Cruise, you cast mostly midgets anyway so you dont look as short as you really are!

Saw Schreiber in the NH Museum in LOndon when I was there a few years back, solid looking unit, tall too

@taniwharugby I haven't read all the books but the ones I have there is regular references to Reacher's size compared to other characters he meets, so it becomes an important part of the story. I'm yet to see the movies, and TBH despite Cruise being a great actor his casting has put me off seeing them.

@taniwharugby not sure whether he bought the rights but the author is a pretty cool guy.

And yeah , you cast other shortarses and the issue goes away. If you want to discuss horribly miscast people the film of the shipping news had Kevin Spacey in a role that was basically written for Liam Neeson .

@jegga I never read the book until later so actually enjoyed Spaceys performance. He was painfully reserved and awkward which I felt worked

@canefan he was a big shambling oaf in the book , uncomfortable with his size and always feeling out of place. I really enjoyed the book and Spacey was never going to be able to get that aspect of him across.

I'd probably feel different if the book wasn't one of my favourites .

Like TR not reading a Reacher book until after watching the first movie I've never had a problem with Cruise.

I thought the Shipping News was pretty average as a movie so have never read the book - not sure if Neeson could have made the story better though.

Ready Player One is the most recent book I've read that is going to be a movie, so it will be interesting, but I think I tend to think of books and entities as mostly separate entities these days so I don't think I'll be too bothered.

Probably a good attitude to take, it's nigh on impossible to represent a book in a couple of hours.

Big TV series like GOT are able to follow the books far more closely.
