He's an excellent super rugby player. Just not quite good enough to play for nz. Would probably star on the wing for Ireland...

Feeling a bit waspish today, BT?

Nah not really. I would have him on the wing for Ireland had of Earls, Trimble, Dave Kearney, and possibly Zebo.

He's the kind of player who would already have 30 caps for the Scots. Ireland tends to wait until their wingers are at least 25 before handing out the caps though, so might not have so many there.

It's a good signing for Leinster but fckin ridiculous if he trots out for Ireland in 3 years.

Agreed and I can't see it happening myself.
He's nominated as a NIQ player.
Nucifora is pushing the Irish qualified mantra more and more in his role.
There's other prospects coming through that show a lot of promise - Adam Byrne, O'Loughlin, Healy, Kelleher, Sweetnam, Conway, Adeolokun, Stockdale, as well as FB's in O'Halloran, Zebo and Carbery.
Given the public leaks on the viewpoints of RFU, FFR and potentially all of SANZAAR on introducing the 5-year residency, I think it will be passed.

This question may have been asked already, but I don't recall it.

Why doesn't NZRU make AB Maori or other A team equivalent as first cap status?

Maybe because so many more players go through the sevens system? NZ Maori seem to play quite sporadically.

Junior All Blacks locks in your eligibility. It's our "A" team. Ignore the "junior" tag, it has no reference to age.

I don't think a Maori team should affect eligibility, it's not our second team.

@Pot-Hale NZ A or JAB are tied, but Maori isn't, in theory there might be someone who might be the 2nd best in a position, may not be Maori, so would not play and technically be uncapped.

Didn't he have that shocker of a game last year when he would probably would have been on the fringe?

I think, like most Chiefs players that get hyped to all shit on here then go overseas when it dawns on them they are a mile from the ABs but can earn good coin offshore, that he was probably only "on the fringe" if you were a Chiefs fan...

No question if 5 or 6 guys got injured he might have had a shot, but thats not on the fringe. You could make a great Chiefs team out of players Chiefs fans were certain would be All Blacks. A shithouse ABs team, but a really good Chiefs team. For all the shit the Saders get for hyping their players they are a mile off the Chiefs guys..

Err .. yeah ok. Jeez you talk some bollocks sometimes Smeagol.

I think you may have that slightly wrong @taniwharugby
The WR rules are that you nominate your second team. Your top team (ABs), nominated second (I think still JABs) and 7s define eligibility locks.

Ahead of Visser, Maitland and Seymour? Pfffft. I think not.

@Crucial what is wrong? Maori don't get them tied to NZ, JABs (or NZ A when they called them that) does...?

When was the last time the JABs or NZ A played?

I'm pretty sure TNW & Lowe were both heavily pushed on here last year, Lowe probably got more hype last year than the idea Dagg would get switched to 15.

For all the shit the Saders get for once thinking Hamilton was a potential AB, they do have a far better strike rate.

Hamilton was an All Black! Scored a test try as well. I believe Kirwan was supposed to eat his hat over ABSH. 🙂

I doubt Lowe was a million miles away from the ABs. Rennie himself said he expected James would make it and Reunion had him in the frame at one point. Why not? He's big, fast and skillful - and still young. However, with the emergence of Ioane and NMS fit again, he's further down the queue - at least five capped wings ahead of him.

Nonetheless, it annoys me. And yet another Ta$man player lost overseas via the Chiefs.

Thanks for clarifying. So it's Junior AB that can cap them. Have they ever toured with Senior AB in November? Would be a good way of locking in a number of players each year. Get them to play tests against Georgia, Portugal, Tonga, Canada, etc.

Or has that been done? Maybe NZRU could hire a stadium for these matches in one location. If they're the A team, then tests against Wolfounds, Saxons or new Wales A team could be arranged.

In fact some of the A team players wouldn't have to travel that far...

    Gibson Park
    Saiili
    Piutau
    McCartney
    Aki
    Lowe

Just that JABs and NZ A are different teams. Only one of them (I think JABs) is the designated second.

@Crucial ah I see, what I meant was they were for all intents and purposes the same team, I thought it used to be NZ A then got changed to JABs and I don't think they ever both played same year, and JABs haven't played for maybe 5 years?

I think Lowe probably saw the re-signings of NMS, Dagg and Ben Smith, Julian Savea is signed through to 2019 (i think?) and Naholo likely to stick around and saw the writing on the wall.

He's a very effective Super Rugby player but probably doesn't have quite the level for ABs, will be a big loss for the Chiefs/ Ta$man.

I had a feeling (could be wrong ... it's happened when I overhype Chiefs players) that NZR had nominated Maori ABs as second team at some stage.

@booboo I don't think that NZR would use the Maori as the second team because it would not capture any of the non-Maori elligible players.

According to Wiki the JABs last played in 2009.

@Bovidae as I said there's more than a small chance I'm wrong, but I seem to recall they may have done that in years when there was no JAB/NZA.

    Rancid bait.

TNW wasn't even playing in NZ last year, he was playing XVs in Japan and Sevens for Samoa. If anything, Chiefs fans tend to shit on him far more than anyone else.

Lowe was getting hyped early last season because he started the season fantastically, Savea was playing like shit and Naholo was always injured. His form fell off later in the season and there was a lot less talk of him as a result.

@booboo possibly in those years in the late 2000s where there more than a few of the normal raised eye brows about the heritage of a few players?
