Between the whining after Dublin and the nabbing of our young talent...are those erstwhile lovable Irish the new English...

Whining and poaching makes them the new Australia. It would take added arrogance and self entitlement to make them the new England.

Ireland probably need a few "South Sea Islanders" before they really take England's mantel...

The core reason Ireland are my 2nd most loathed team (behind Aussie) is because in 2006 (?) They came over as triple crown winners, with their greatest ever team, O'Driscoll, O'Gara, O'Connell, O'Stringer, O'D'arcy, O'Issac O'Boss etc. And we had the Argies a week later / earlier, so Ted was doing rotation & we played some of our 2nd strings & pissed about playing Richie & Holah left & right & they full on lost their shit at the lack of respect that we usually reserve for the (non poached) brown chaps from Samoa, Fiji & Tokoroa when they tour early season.

    And then we beat them.

It's one thing screaming "respect me! I demand it! You almost killed us that time!" but then losing is just sad.

Totally agree. Especially as during that 2006 tour we beat them 34–23 and then 27–17 a week later, after pumping them 45–7 in Dublin the year before.

2005/6 was the peak of "BOD coulda doied"-bleating post Lions tour as well. That got very tedious.

Really shits me we lost to them last year. At least England have a reason to be arrogant: they've won a world cup, beaten us a few times, and will shortly have our Tier-1-consecutive-record-minus-Cyprus thingy.

@Tim Not a complete shock but he has started the season well. Perhaps he didn't see himself supplanting TJP, worried about another injury so thought it was time to cash in. A shame

He has been in excellent form for the 3 games of the season so far. To the point where I would consider pairing him with TJP and leaving Smith out.

I'm not surprised, unfortunately. He will earn a packet more than being "break glass in case of emergency" AB 3rd choice 9.

I wish he'd just say that though, rather than the usual crap about wanting to experience France etc.

With his history of injuries, having won a RWC, and never been able to nail the first or second All Blacks spot, this is probably the best for him. Wishing him well in France! He's joining a lot of other Kiwis at La Rochelle, which is a club on the rise.

Nothing to worry about for the Chiefs either, with Brad Weber already in the squad (assuming he's staying, because he's also coming off contract).

I can't blame him. I think he could play the house down all year and best case he'd get the AB bench spot.

TJP has got some serious bargaining chips - NZ will not want to lose him.

There are a lot of fringe players who might be at risk: Shields, Bird etc spring to mind.
