Off-season is beginning and the 49ers are off the mark by signing QB Brian Hoyer to a 2-year deal and WR Pierre Garcon.
Released a bunch of players including WR Torrey Smith and safety Antoine Bethea, and CKap has left the building. Washington may still trade QB Kirk Cousins to the 49ers since he has made it known that he doesn't want to stick around there.@Sneakdefreak It seems like the Redskins have taken the 49ers mantle as the league's dysfunctional team - Redskins GM Scott Mcloughan (former 49er GM) has been sent on leave and is not running things anymore, he hasn't been with the team since late February and wasn't at the Combine. 49ers meanwhile through the reps of GM Lynch and Head Coach Shanahan certainly seem be re-building their reputation as a destination players want to come to - the Free Agents 49ers are adding have had competing offers from other franchises but chosen San Fran (the salary cap room the 49ers have is helpful too). Draft is becoming clearer for the 49ers.

Myles Garrett? Or trade down?
@Sneakdefreak If Garrett is there I think they pull the trigger. But with the recent news on Cousins it sounds like he is the future QB of the 49ers - either this season or next, so drafting a QB at 2 is probably out of the question now (unless they do something weird like draft a QB at 2 and then trade him for Cousins). If they can land a big physical receiver like Jeffrey or Pryor then a first round WR is also probably not a go. DT Jonathan Allen also didn't have a great combine and the 49ers have targetted some DTs in free agency so he is unlikely.
Trade down definitely looks good if they can get someone to trade up - there are some QB needy teams out there so definitely could happen. If I had to guess right now if they stay at 2 I say they go one of the two elite safeties (this is apparently a great year for defensive backs) or Solomon Thomas from Stanford. There's talk they might go the RB Fournette but I don't buy it, not at 2, it's a deep RB class. If they trade down or swap first round picks with the Skins for Cousins then that opens up a whole lot of possibilities but one might be Christian McCaffrey from Stanford - he could be outrageous in a Kyle Shanahan scheme.
This may still seem like a whole lot of options are still available ... and there is... but given the 49ers started with almost every position a possible hole - things are becoming clearer.

NFL Free Agency officially kicks off today.
One big trade already.
Texans have traded Brock Osweiler to the Browns.
Essentially Texans wanted to get rid of Brock's contract and Browns wanted an extra pick (potentially to trade for Jimmy Garropolo?). There's a lot of talk that the Browns may just release or trade Brock.
Texans are presumably clearing the path to take a run at Tony Romo.
Browns get- Osweiler, 2018 Houston 2nd rounder, 2017 Houston 6th rounder.
Texans get- 2017 Browns 4th rounder, to be free of Osweiler

Shame the rest of the team is pants. I reckon they should take the best player they can at two and let Hoyer play this season. If Kirk wants to come he can come over when his contract ends in a year. That way we can actually start building him a team that will be worth joining

Reports are that the Patriots are picking up Stephon Gilmore. I didn't see that coming. Probably means that Ryan will go. Chances are Harmon and Butler might stay as well.
With Bennett on the outer, they've picked up Allen from the Colts.Will be interesting to see what happens with Hightower, who has been clutch in the past 2 superbowl wins.

@mariner4life so true. Texans Coach O'Brien will be happy - the rumour is he didn't even meet with Brock before the front office decided to sign him to that massive deal.
@canefan I agree. 49ers should be in no great hurry - if they can manage a decent trade for Cousins now then go for it, but otherwise they should wait it out a year and keep adding talent. In the NFL you can re-tool your roster fairly quickly - it's going to take longer than this offseason but theyve clearly started the process.

The Pats will be going for it the next two years so not surprised by such a big signing by their standards. Brady is 40 next season and Father Time will catch up with him soon.

Logan Ryan off to the Titans. 3 years, $30m
I'm expecting the Pats to keep Butler.. but there are rumours of a trade with Cooks..which I think would be a bad idea.. unless theres another hidden gem on defence that BB knows about that we don't@mimic No need for a big name WR when they have Elderman and Hogan. I have a feeling the Pats will draft LA Tech WR Trent Taylor, and he'll probably go on to be a 1,000 yard, 8+ TD type of player.

49ers add another Chicago QB - Matt Barkley. Looks like they're going with veterans for this season, and no CKap return (I personally think he's done).
Washington continues to implode - they just fired the GM.

RG III is finished in Cleveland. Looks like he will have to be a backup somewhere else if he wants to remain playing.

I know the worst player in the league is still incredibly good, but to wash out at Cleveland? Wow.
