Right, I misread it and thought both were signing on for 2018 and 2019. He's having one more roll of the dice. I don't know what sort of season he'd have to have to get back in the All Blacks squad. Hansen is very loyal to his current squad so he'll need some injury assistance.

He certainly won't surpass Whitelock in the pecking order (and shouldn't) but against the Lions he could be a good option to have around. Bit more grunt than Pat T and Romano IMO.
BBBR is obviously getting him to really up his work rate as often at the moment you can't tell them apart.
I think he may be in serious consideration.

One way to take it to the Lions is to beat them at their own strengths and smash them at the breakdowns and halt their ball carriers in their tracks. That's the kind of skill set Bird has.

The good news is that recent comments from both Hames and Leitch confirm they are keen to re-sign for the Chiefs.

I don't think that is true. And it certainly hasn't been true in previous years. But thankfully he's found his feet and wont look out of place at international level I reckon. I agree he probably is in serious consideration.

I was on the plane with these guys last year when they were enroute to Japan, I think (Kahui was with them).

They had them in economy - was quite funny as many of them were massive. I still remember Martie Mckenzie in the middle seat between a lock and a prop. Poor chap.

There are some great names in that squad.

Lansdown is a 1st 5 but has been listed as a midfielder. It's only Hong Kong!

@Bovidae Yes, I saw that last night! Great for the man himself and for the Magpies that there's progress 👍🏼 I hope he'll be ready to go in August. The Magpies might need him to have a full squad on the paddock ...

Club rugby? Pfft, I'd have thought he'd be stepping back straight into his vacant All Blacks jersey this June.

TKB is to be rested anyway. Taumateine will start vs the Sunwolves and Richard Judd will be on the bench.

That's a horrendous injury list! I hope Sam can be spared from further injury; for his own sake, the Chiefs and the Magpies ...

Leitch is going to move back to the Sunwolves in 2019 if all goes well.

Wasn't he just talking about wanting to stay at the Chiefs a few weeks back? Yeah, found it:

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/super-rugby/91068723/michael-leitch-wants-to-stick-with-the-chiefs-ahead-of-2019-world-cup-in-japan

Have to wonder if Cooper is quietly showing him the door but who knows, maybe Jamie Joseph and Filo Tiatia have managed to change his mind.

He's been one of my favourite players over the last few years but to be honest, I don't mind him heading off. He's getting on in years and the Chiefs have a few young and promising players like Seu, Brown and Sanders who should be given the shot to step up, so it's not bad timing.
