I saw Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 yesterday after watching the original movie again the night before. As mentioned, the soundtrack is great. Baby Groot is the star and the jail scene with Rocket and Yondu was brilliant. My one criticism was that the CGI-heavy battle scenes were hard on the eyes on the big screen.

I'm also working my way through the 2017 Best Picture nominees. First up was Hacksaw Ridge which was enjoyable, and an amazing story. Mel Gibson's movies are always brutal and graphic. Sam Worthington needs to work on that American accent though.

4 Conscientious Objectors out of 5 Medal of Honors

Next was Moonlight, which I found OK but not what I was expecting as the overall winner. Naomie Harris was excellent but Mahershala Ali didn't really have a lot of screentime in his role. Michael Shannon was a more worthy winner I thought.

Between Extreme Prejudice and Trespass Walter Hill must have aged irreversibly. Just not the same, visually or any other way.

Looks like I'm not alone in this? I thought I was just too old and that's why watching Rogue One on my TV was far more enjoyable than the huge screen 3D version.
I don't want to have to look all around the screen to see what's going on.

Ted Kotcheff on First Blood and Wake in Fright

I made Wake in Fright in a small town called Broken Hill, and the editor of The Barrier Truth told me over dinner, “Mr. Kotcheff, you do know that the men outnumber the women in this town by three to one.” I said, “Three to one?” Then I said, “Well, I didn’t see any brothels when I came through here. Are there any brothels here?” He said, “Brothels? Certainly not! No, we don’t have any brothels in our town!” I said, “Well, is there a lot of homosexuality?” He said, “Homosexuality! Hey, mate, we’re Australians! We don’t do dirty things like that!” And I said, “Well, what do they do for human contact?” And he said, “They fight.”

Hoyts cinema in Melbourne had a double feature last night, Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986). I hadn't seen either movie in over a decade (maybe even two in the case of the original). Alien had a few jump moments but the dated-ness took away from a lot, the baby alien in particular looked more comical rather than scary and got a lot of laughs. 2.5 secret missions out of 5 expendable crew members.

Aliens was a different story entirely. Action, suspense, awesome 1 liners, generally scary looking aliens. A couple of the spaceship scenes looked pretty bad as did the slow destruction of the reactor with those 'trendy at the time' fake as all hell lightning bolts added post production (seriously they should just edit those scenes and hit them with some modern effects) Despite that I absolutely loved it. 4.5 'they mostly come out at night' out of 5 'mostly'

Terrible first review. Spot on second one. I love the contrasting styles between the flicks. Parker was a cool character, Lambert was a fucken whiny coward and Ash was a fluffybunny. I saw the second at a pub in town and it got laughs mainly because of the cheesy 80sness

I love both flicks and have tickets to the new one in an advanced screening on Wednesday. I'll do a full review with loads of spoilers after I see it.

@MN5 Ha each to their own. I'm sure at the time I thought Alien was awesome but it just hasn't aged too good.
They did an extended preview of Covenant in between films, and by extended I mean I had a feeling someone had messed up and gave us the full film. Looks really good but I can see some terrifically whiny useless characters whose untimely demise will be the cause of celebration. Hope its better than the Alien3/resurrection incarnations. Haven't yet seen Prometheus and may not from what I've heard about it

    Really?

Not saying it was the worst movie, buuuut it was a film that could have and should have been so much better.
    Going through the Alien universe..

Alien - Love it, absolute classic, seen it more times then i can count.

Aliens - love it even more, gem of a movie. One of the best if not the best sequel ever made.

Alien 3 - ok, not so great especially when compared to the above. But given the troubles it had, directors sacked, writers sacked etc. Not as bad as its made out to be

    Alien 4 - shit

Prometheus - Watched it once. Stupid people doing stupid things. "wow whats this strange alien looking thing, i know lets touch it!'

I preferred 4 over 3. Ron Perlman was cool and there were some awesome deaths.

Actually Winona Ryder was in it so it loses marks. Lots of marks.

Prometheus did have a lot of dumb 'can't wait til they get killed characters' but which Alien flick doesn't? I know it really divides fans but I'm definitely in the 'love it' category.

Winona has a nice rack so there's that, also the scene where the two aliens turn on the small one is great.
I'm not sure what I find more difficult to accept, someone who has the option of supporting the abs but supports Scotland or saying publicly Prometheus is brilliant.

I think it is possible to support two teams. I'll check and let you know. My other half preferred Prometheus to ANY Alien movie ( apparently they're grose and scary ) so if that doesn't prove all women are mental then nothing does.

As for your other point I'm ashamed of myself as a proud breast enthusiast that I've never realised before...

Her character was annoying as fuck and she didn't whip them out. I stand by my original point emphatically.
