That's a horrendous injury list! I hope Sam can be spared from further injury; for his own sake, the Chiefs and the Magpies ...

Leitch is going to move back to the Sunwolves in 2019 if all goes well.

Wasn't he just talking about wanting to stay at the Chiefs a few weeks back? Yeah, found it:

        http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/super-rugby/91068723/michael-leitch-wants-to-stick-with-the-chiefs-ahead-of-2019-world-cup-in-japan

Have to wonder if Cooper is quietly showing him the door but who knows, maybe Jamie Joseph and Filo Tiatia have managed to change his mind.

He's been one of my favourite players over the last few years but to be honest, I don't mind him heading off. He's getting on in years and the Chiefs have a few young and promising players like Seu, Brown and Sanders who should be given the shot to step up, so it's not bad timing.

@Unco err... Doesn't that article pretty much back up the one saying he's moving in 2019?

Not if you look at the calendar and notice that the 2019 Super season is before the 2019 RWC. 😛

The abrasive and skilful loose-forward duo of Mitchell Brown and Lachlan Boshier are the latest additions to the 2018 Gallagher Chiefs squad!

I've never heard of him, and this would be disappointing if true. There is enough local talent available.

I don't get it. Why? Even with Leitch probably leaving, the Chiefs already have more than enough talent in the back row with Messam, Cane, Boshier, Seu, Sanders, Karpik and Brown.

                      More on this signing.

Hard-working Canadian forward Tyler Ardron has signed with the Gallagher Chiefs for the 2018 and 2019 Investec Super Rugby seasons. At 1.96m and 114kg, Ardron is adept at number 8, blindside flanker and lock. The 25-year-old currently plays for Ospreys in the Guinness PRO12 competition.

“I'm hugely excited to be joining the Gallagher Chiefs and to have the opportunity to play Super Rugby. I can't wait to get to New Zealand and find out what makes Super Rugby the best club Competition in the world and be in an environment with such great players and coaches. I look forward to contributing and being a major part in the future success of the Chiefs” said Ardron.

Gallagher Chiefs head coach Dave Rennie said: “This is a great signing for the Chiefs. Tyler is a very experienced and dynamic International loose forward. He’s been keen to test himself in Super Rugby, having been a standout for Ospreys over the past four seasons. He’s a bloody good man and his leadership and work ethic will align perfectly with the Chiefs.”

Tyler Ardron made his debut for Canada in 2012. A natural leader, Ardron captained Canada in the 2015 Rugby World Cup. The versatile forward linked up with Welsh Pro 12 club Ospreys in 2013 and to date he has played 64 games for the side. The consistent performer was named Ospreys Player of the Year in 2015. Tyler Ardron will play for Bay of Plenty in the Mitre 10 Cup.

To answer your question, Ardron seems to have been signed as a lock. With BBBR, Bird and Allardice all signed for next year and beyond perhaps Seu has been poached back by the Blues.

I also assume that Cooper is behind this signing as he will be the Chiefs coach.

on one hand, I think it is great players wanting to come and play in super rugby, but the downside is we have plenty of other lock/loose forwards about Mitre 10 Cup that could fill that spot and potentially go on to be an AB.

Well, that's annoying, I'd rather they brought in a NZer - but I guess it's a good experience for a Canadian.

                            Basically what TR just said.

Prefer NZ eligible players where possible.

But don't say NZ rugby doesn't do it's bit for developing nations 🙂

No and I'd have preferred a NZ eligible player (did someone say Whetu Douglas is off to Europe?).

But I see the odd player from a minnow country being us doing our bit.

What I will say, and highlighted in a post below, is that I have less of an issue if overseas players that are signed for Super rugby are also playing in the NPC.

I guess it makes a bit of sense as a lock but I sure as hell hope Seu hasn't been poached. Could be replacing Tucker instead, I guess, though that'd be pretty shit news cause he's a really promising player.

And yeah booboo, Whetu Douglas is off to Italy on a 2 season contract though he has an out clause after one season. I think there was talk of the Chiefs and Saders being interested in signing him after that season.

My view on foreign player being given Super rugby contracts are probably pretty well known after recently discussing Leitch.
This signing is just as much of a joke.
How is signing a journeyman canadian good for New Zesland rugby? There is no star crowd pulling power that someone like Nadolo argueably had. This is just taking up a valueable spot of a NZ player when we are already getting raided by rich NH clubs.
Lets hope he isn't playing ahead of someone like Seu who could potentially become an AB with regular starts.
