Good to see Mikaele-Tu'u can go the full 80 minutes. Has played very well tonight.

Try Adrian Choat. The conversion from Leger is good.

Full time: New Zealand 68 - 26 Italy

Apart from Willie Lose's commentating, that was enjoyable to watch. Although the Italians fell away in the second half, they look a good side and had us under pressure at times

Haha, I was just typing that they should take Rakete-Stones off because he looked tired. And then he scores a try! He's still on the field.

                      NZ 56, Italy 26.

Yes, it's really good to see that in the next few years we'll have some good home grown props. It's a pity that Farrell had to go home injured, but fortunately he will still be eligible for the U20s next year.

Yes, they geo-block the WR site in every country where the JWC is televised (even if only some games are shown).

Again, the Italians score after a driving maul. A real problem area for the Kiwis. Any maul experts on the Fern? What's the problem? Technique, strength or both?

                            Try converted: 39-21 NZ

                            That's the half time score.

@Stargazer stopping the maul from a lineout drive seems to be a real issue not just the NZ 20s,but also the Blues in super rugby.

How do you stop it..?,sack the catcher once he hits the ground, but you need at least 2 -3 guys to smash also the support lifters around him.,that will either stop it stone cold,or force the attacking team to restart another maul, which won't have the immediate numbers, and the same process starts again..

What your wanting them to do,is change lanes, illegally or get isolated, teams often get penalised starting a new maul, and players join that maul in front of the ball carrier..

On saying all that,it's something the European teams put a lot of work into because of their size and style of game they play, where we tend to sacrifice this area of the game, because we want out athletes to be more mobile and have great ball handling skills.

@Steven-Harris I found it quite frustrating to see the Italians score 3 of their tries off a driving maul, which our boys weren't able to stop. Against the Italians and Scots we could get away with it, but if we play England come finals time, we might not be that lucky.

@Stargazer I hear you,it was almost like as soon as we were in our red zone, there was almost a sense of inevitability of try coming from a drive, and I agree regarding England, they are very big,and I"m pretty sure they will fancy themselves at set piece time against us.

The challenge for the coaching staff,is to negate this tactic, personally as per my previous post, the boys have got to get aggressive and hit the carrier once he hits the ground.

There was a good example in tonight's game,Pouri Rakete Stones went in hard on the catcher, but just got his timing wrong and caught him in the air,to me we are just a bit passive in this area.

If you are able to utube examples of mauls being broken down, you will also find a deal of aggression went in.

Quite extraordinarily that Willie Lose, being a former Tongan international himself, doesn't know that Gus Leger was also a Tongan international (not a Samoan international, like he said twice during commentry).

I recall after a Softball u19 world champs in the USA in the mid 90s that both Gus Leger and Jeremy Stanley were offered pro baseball contracts in the states. Leger took that opportunity up, while Stanley turned it down. Of course Stanley probably already had plans (studying medicine plus strong pro rugby opportunities)

Never really heard what happened ed with his baseball, as hard to find that sort of news pre internet days, but he reappeared in NZ rugby a few years later

Looking it up on the web I see Leger played one of the minor leagues, from wiki:
Gus Leger was signed by the California Angels in 1993 after being spotted as a softball player for New Zealand. Leger spent 2 years playing Rookie Ball in the Arizona League as an outfielder.[15]

Finally got to watch the replay. Tamati Tua's try was reminiscent of Kirwan in the first RWC, running through the entire Italian team
