Movie review thread...
-
Watched the new 3 Musketeers, with Orlando Bloom, Milla Jojovich (??)<br />
<br />
Kinda like a James Bond Musketeers, farfetched, but a bit of harmless fun.<br />
<br />
We need to talk about Kevin; Tilda Swinton, John C Reilly<br />
<br />
One of those films whose content isnt one you can say you liked, as it is more a disturbing tale of how a mother deals with the grief and guilt after her son goes on a killing spree at his high school. -

That last bit is probably a massive spoiler TR.<br />
<br />
Haven't seen the movie but understand that for much of it you know he's done something but not qhat he's done.<br />

<br />
This is the synopsis from IMDB; The mother of a teenage boy who went on a high-school killing spree tries to deal with her grief - and feelings of responsibility for her child's actions.<br />
<br />
I expect if you went to a DVD shop for it, the cover would say that too, so if you were surprised at that....I knew what he had done, justnot how, or why. -
Note:<br />
<br />
I moved the discussion of Stieg Larsson's Millenium series to the new Nerd stuff and pop culture discussion thread<br />
<br />
http://www.daimenhut...cussion-thread/<br />
<br />
EDIT: reposting some comments from the book thread:<br />
<br />
Hey Nepia, was just moving some discussion off the movie review thread really. Thought that putting it in a discussion thread would give people more freedom to really get into it, rather than worrying about clogging up the reviews thread.<br />
<br />
I moved the "redshirts" stuff to put more interesting Trek on the new thread.<br />
<br />
If you want to discuss books on this thread, go for gold. That's what's it's for. The new thread gives people a place they can get into in-depth/comparative discussion about different aspects of genres of books/movies/tv series/etc or individual works/series. It's also a place you can drop a link or comment about trek/star wars/fantasy/whatever if you don't want to start a new thread.<br />
<br />
EDIT: If you want to start a new thread to talk about Game of Thrones or something then please feel free to do so. If you don't want to start a new thread then the nerd/pop culture thread is there for you.
-

Fair enough. The only reviews I had seen or read tip toed around what the big event is (particularly Mark Kermode's BBC movie podcast in which WNTTAK was discussed at some length). I haven't followed the film's promotional material and assumed that the event was treated similarly as, my understanding of Kermode's review was that the audience not knowing exactly what it is that Kevin has done was an significant facet of the movie. -
Dunno, I watched it, always knew (maybe I assumed, I just dont think I did?) what he did (not in as much detail) as more the how and how the mother ended up where she was, there is a bit more to it.<br />
<br />
If it was to be a surprise, the way they portray him (Kevin) throughout via flashbacks given the movie is centered around his mother trying to get on with her life after the event, they do a very poor way to disguise it! -
Just seen Flags of Our Fathers and Letter from Iwo Jima. Great films and its amazing how in Letters you're almost barracking for the ****. Havent seen much of the Pacific but might have to purchase the box set now.<br />
<br />
Saw the Ugly Truth with the missus. Christ what a shit film. Gerald Butler should get back into the sandles where he belongs.Shit he's made some cråp films since 300. A<br />
<br />
I saw part of a review for Terrible Bosses. Is it true that that weedy, weird looking guy wants to kill Jennifer Aniston because she's sexually harrassing him? Think I'll give that one a miss. Serously, whats the deal with Jason Bateman? That prick is as funny as a fart in a funeral. -

Man, this new software is puritanical! Has it really blocked a word above that is a colloquial term for Japanese starting with 'N' that is also a shortened term for the things on the end of our manboobs?<br />

I think it was Japs<br />
<br />
It should be less aggressive now. The default bad word list was odd -
I just finished watching Kevin Costner in The Postman . I mainly wanted to see it because I had heard what utter shit it was and I wanted to see just how bad it was for myself , but I have to admit I quite enjoyed it and don't know why it was so bagged .<br />
I watched Flags of Our Fathers and Letter From Iwo Jima a few weeks ago Rancid expecting them to be as great as I had heard but found them boring as hell .<br />
Moral , don't listen to the opinions of film critics because they don't seem to know shit . -
Havent seen much of the Pacific but might have to purchase the box set now.
<br />
In my opinion The Pacific doesn't compare to either of these films and is far below Band of Brothers as a miniseries - however defenders try to defend it, i.e. it doesn't follow a company etc etc. It was just boring.<br />

Costner was getting unfairly bagged for a while there, his shit films weren't as shit as people make out and he's made some crackers.<br />
<br />

Bateman is a straight man so he's not supposed to be in your face funny, watch Arrested Development, he's hilarious. Horrible Bosses was ok, not great, but ok. The bosses (Aniston, Colin Farrell, and Kevin Spacey) were all hilarious. -
a few actors seem to suffer (sometimes unfairly) at the hands of critics for no good reason; Costner, Reeves, Cage and often prejudices people against what can sometimes be a great movie!<br />
<br />
I watched the Iwo Jima films a couple of years back, went in with high hopes, but was disappointed! -

Yeah the offending word was Jåps. I can understand the other word being sensored. Will have to use the Norwegian letters more øften. Weird that the S word got through but not the other one.<br />
<br />
I saw one episode of the Pacific and must admitt that it wasnt a patch on Band of Brothers. I've just finished reading one of the books the series is based on and thought I'd give it another go. Might wait until its on TV again rather than waste money on it.<br />
<br />
Yeah Bateman was good in Arrested Development but IMHO was shæt in the films I've seen him in. Saw him recently in the Breakup and Couples Retreat and he was utter shart. Credit to him though for making such an amazing comeback. For a long time his greatest acheivement was Teen Wolf Too. -
Refn's Pusher has had a London remake. Hmm ...<br />
<br />

<br />
Orbital's soundtrack sounds good though. Agyness Dyne looks alright in blue lingerie. -
The Iron Lady. <br />
<br />
Terrible sequel to Iron Man -
I watched the Descendants last night with George Clooney. I thought it was a great movie - which is lucky because I went to one of those boutique cinemas and it cost me $17.50 for the bloody ticket. If I had paid that kind of money to see Titanic or Mullholland Drive* I would have rioted.<br />
<br />
Clooney was in good form, both the storylines were pretty interesting. I was a bit worried with myself as I found the eldest daughter to be quite enchanting but I checked IMDB and she's over 20, phew .... (Although she doesn't photograph well incidently). <br />
<br />
The basic storyline is that Clooney's wife is in a coma and he's the trustee of a large piece of land in Hawai'i that he owns with a bunch of cousins and they're having to sell it due to some trust laws.<br />
<br />
Best movie of the year for me.<br />
<br />
<br />

*Yes, I think this sucked, Lynch is overrated, and a lesbian sex scene with Naomi Watts is not enough to save it. -
Quiet you. Lynch is great and so is Mulholland Drive. I bet you never even liked Twin Peaks! <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/rugby/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

I didn't mind Twin Peaks and liked Blue Velvet and The Elephant Man, but I don't believe in loving all films by directors* and Mullholland Drive was so far up it's own arse, it's comes out its mouth.<br />
<br />
*For instance I really didn't like early Coen Brothers films but have really enjoyed their recent output.
