Looks like super 8 is falling into a pattern that happens in the Auckland comp.. generally it's about 6-7 schools who have a genuine shot of making the top 4.. rest try to avoid relegation matches..

There's a cycle usually though.. however since the tv broadcasting St Kent's is a regular in playoffs.. they used to be rubbish

@mimic Yeah St Kents were quite strong in the late 90s and early 00s making a few Auckland finals and winning one (they had the likes of Lavea twins, Rokocoko, Afoas, Kaino) then they really regressed and actually got demoted into the 2nd tier. Then there was a huge focus/$ put into their rugby program and have had some pretty sustained success (and now coached by one of the Lavea twins, whilst the other coaches Kings).

That Hastings team features eight Year 14s (that's Form 8 under the old terminology) so their success this year should be taken with a grain of salt.

When they played (and smoked) MAGS in pre-season the MAGS coach looked at Hasting's team sheet before the game and remarked that it was an identical team to that which they beat in the National Final the year before.

It's true that there are several Year 14s in the Hastings BHS squad, however, most of them have all played a year up last year. Only one or two of those Year 14s become 19 this year, all the others are just 17 year-olds turning 18 this year.

I've seen a lot of comments in social media dismissing the success of Hastings as cheating within the rules or playing with players that turn 19 this year, but that's just sour grapes. The fact is that, while they have the advantage of playing in a group that hasn't changed much since last year, they are not playing with a group of players that is older than those of other teams. They also have one or two 16 year olds in the team by the way.

I have also seen accusations of Hastings poaching players from outside the region with scholarships, clearly showing that they know nothing about the school. It's a low decile that can't afford scholarships and almost all off these players are home grown. Before anyone mentions him, Kini Naholo started school in Hastings last year and his school fees etc are paid for by Waisake. I don't know how and why he ended up there (another brother plays in Taranaki), but Waisake moved to NZ to live with their uncle in Wanganui, who wanted him to get a proper education in NZ and his brothers have followed his move.

@KiwiMurph Yeah.. they put a lot of money into their scholarships..
I think their first xv is the only good team they have.. schools like mags, Auckland grammar, sacred heart and de la salle generally have strong teams coming up the age groups

@Stargazer Suggesting Hastings poach from outside the region is laughable, Hastings actually loses a bunch of players to scholarships etc every year (Lindersfarne pick off at least one standout most years).

not a great season for Bedes, they also lost to St Thomas a couple of weeks back.

Yup, St Peter's and De La Salle suffering with the lack of bonus points.
St Peter's defence is amazing though.. Still surprised that they lost to Grammar..

MAGS and De La Salle are suffering with injuries (each with 5+ players out) though.. The holidays can't come quick enough for them

@mimic Yes AGS is usually a fixture we get up for as well and have had a fair bit of success over them in recent years. La Salle dropping points against Kelston could prove costly in the end.

Long time lurker first time poster.

Ok im a Northern Hemisphere poster but have spent time in NZ and just thinking through NZ's rugby success and alot of it seems to be down to the 1st iv competition which seems to have grown important than local club rugby it seems.

But how does it work, ok I get that each franchise have their championship i.e. the blues championship is Auckland 1a vs the North Harbour Competition( Whangerei is Northland i suppose)

While the Crusades championship is a league with the top 15 college in the reason.

The other three regions I have no idea.

I know there is an Otago Competition and a Southland competition but it seems that Southland Boys high 1st iv dont even play in the Southland competition?

The Hurricanes competition and the Chiefs competition i dont know how they work, in the Hurricanes I know the wellington comp gets a semifinalist but the super 8 thing, i duno how that works?

Would anyone care to enlighten me on the structure?

                              It's complicated.

The Super 8 was formed in 1997 and incorporates the eight boys' high schools from their respective provincial cities of the central North Island.

From north to south that is:
                              Tauranga
                              Hamilton
                              Rotorua

They play a round robin each year with the top 2 teams meeting in the final. The winner of the Super 8 is not guaranteed to make the top 4 for the nationals though as further games are played to determine the representatives from each region (Blues, Chiefs, Hurricanes and South Island). The Super 8 has 4 teams from the Chiefs region and 4 teams from the Hurricanes region. The latter teams will have to play schools from Wellington to decide the Hurricanes winner.

There is also a Central North Island competition which features 10 other schools not in the Super 8.

In the Chiefs region the winners from each province (Counties, Waikato, BOP and Taranaki) will play in SFs and a final with the winner advancing to the Top 4.

@jacktothed10 I believe Whangarei Boys High is the only Northland school in the North Harbour comp, and while the experience might be good, they are getting some heavy beatings, but I also know there a lot of talented kids that go to WBHS who have chosen to not play for the 1st 15 and just play 2nds, or play for a club, or a couple of cases, not play at all.

                                      Super 8

Just read that Hastings Boys have beaten Hamilton Boys in Hamilton today. Final score was close: 20-16.
The Super 8 Final will be played between the same teams next weekend, but should then be played in Hastings, because they've finished top of the table. Hopefully, the unbeaten streak will continue!

@Nepia Usually kick-off is at 12.00pm, but I think it will be televised so the game might be moved to about 2.30pm.
