haha, yeah it has been amusing how many days it seems to be raining on The Killing.

YEah it will be interesting to see how it plays out! BUt jeez Linden is a muppet sometimes, although I supposed her and HOlder have been shafted any number of times by others with alterior motives they cant trust anyone, but as a main character I struggle to like her because she is so stupid!

I decided early on that I wasn't meant to like her. I do like Holder though
and like the way he started off being the character you were meant to think is a
dick, had the most obvious 'secret' (and one that those with 'morals' could lord
over him easily) but has turned out to be the one with the most integrity
without overplaying his hand.
The whole show seems more a vehicle to show human behaviours than a straight murder mystery.
yeah I agree.
and I think I said it earlier, it is a nice change from the usual cop type dramas where they catch the killer each episode and then another appears. I also like Holder, his likable wannabe gangster persona.
Watched Safe House recently and Holder has a part in that as well, was interesting seeing him in another role he actually looks healthy and normal!

Mrs TR is always amused/disgusted at how often Linden wears those horrid sweaters and turtle necks <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/rugby/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Just finished the second (and final) series of Stargate: Universe. Really enjoyed it, despite the ending which was clearly done when the producers and cast were unaware whether they’d be picked up for a third season.

I didn’t watch any of the previous Stargate series and understand that SGU may have suffered from a bit of a fan backlash as it wasn’t the type of series existing fans wanted.

I enjoyed it as a sort of Battlestar Gallactica-lite. Big ship in constant peril with no way for the inhabitants to get home against a pseudo-religious back drop.

Good cast with Robert Carlyle providing an interesting anti-hero. Suffers from the Red Shirt problem that all these series have – in order to create tension the audience has to believe that the major characters are in peril but you can’t kill off a major character every other week or you end up with no one left – so they generally kill off any minor character who has a line in the first five minutes. The series also suffers from the (all too common) desire the wrap each episode up neatly in the allotted 40 mins so that viewers can join and leave at will. This becomes a little frustrating when you watch the show on DVD over a period of a couple of weeks rather than on TV over a couple of months. Some of the ideas introduced are solved before you really get the impression that they are a serious problem other than through exposition.

Not having watched the other Stargate series I don’t know whether the coincidence that so many alien planets look like British Columbia is unique to SGU or a Stargate trope.

Overall, I’d recommend it to Sci-Fi fans who aren’t put off by an open ending who are looking for a fun ride.

I was thinking it wasnt that bad of an accent given hes a not a classically trained actor. Also you think given that the guy he is playing has lived in Aussie for sometime, based on the facts, he would like have had a Aussie/Scottish accent anyway.

I will say though that as far as first episodes go it was pretty slow. If I hadnt been aware of the story I wouldnt be tuning in to watch the second ep. But Im going to see where it goes and how far off the facts it veers
Im giving it a good crack. 3 episodes in now so will see it through.

Just finished the third season of Justified. Very glad I pushed through the mediocre start to the first season, as from the second half of the second season onwards it was compelling. I think it got better when the writers realised that you didn't have to kill somebody off every episode, or end the thing with Raylan winning yet another gunfight.

I enjoyed the finish to the 3rd series, resolved a few key plot points but still left a fair bit open.

The Killing got there in the end and the Finale was a good watch. Not disappointing and what I expected. I enjoyed both series.

Yeah I watched it last night too, and agree, enjoyed it.
We (Mrs TR and I) suspected Jamie form the start, although he technically didnt kill her, but as the investigation bumbled along you are distracted form him and start looking elsewhere too.
The sister was the surprise part.
re the Killing
Jamie was always a possible, but so were many others. I liked the way they 'solved' things at the start of the program which gave a chance to show the reactions and outcomes of the people involved (which is what the show was really about). It was good that there was a small 'twist' though as that paced the episode as if the solving was at the end. I thought it was cleverly handled without being too clever for it's own good.
I have got a little Sci Fi back in my life courtesy of the Canadian TV series Continuum. http://continuumtheseries.com/

I don't know if it is airing anywhere other than on Showcase network in Canada, but you can find it in the usual places. Four episodes in, and it is really holding my attention. Basic premise is a police woman from 70 years in the future in in current times. But without giving anything away, it is a little more complex, and not just a buddy cop show with a twist. Recommend watching the first episode, and seeing if it hooks you.

I've just started watching Breaking Bad with our teenage son. I'm enjoying it. My son loves it and can't get enough of it.

Looks worth a look, thanks for the heads up. Being a Canadian show and about Time Travel does Michael J Fox make a cameo appearance? He knows all about Flux Capacitors.

I've moved on to The Shield. Is anyone on here a fan? Watched the first three episodes and am already hooked. Gritty cop drama set in LA, ran 7 seasons starting in about 2000.

Have about 80 more episodes to go. Hopefully by the time I'm finished the TdF will be heating up and the Olympics will be just around the corner, allowing me a seamless transition from drama to sport...

Saw the first 2 episodes then quit because the acting by the lead bald guy was just so horrible. Also thought the "shock" that he did in the first episode was so unlikely to happen, became dis interested.

For what it's worth, with "The Wire", it's takene me 10 episodes, but I do now agree that it's a bloody brilliant series. Once you get to know all the characters, you realise just how deeply written it was. Very very slow going, but I "get it" now.

I have been rewatching The Wire for the first time in a decade during the summer doldrums here. Through the first two, and just started season three. It is as good as I remember. I am really looking forward to the kids arc in season four. I thought it was the best of the series.
Here are the 10 harshest reviews of “Newsroom,” which debuts Sunday on HBO:

1. “‘The Newsroom’ had me contemplating that which is so feared in my industry: changing the channel. And I was watching it on DVD.” — ABC’s Jake Tapper, The New Republic

2. “…an exponentially tedious undertaking for the viewer…” — Hank Stuever, Washington Post

3. “It’s so naive it’s cynical.” — Emily Nussbaum, New Yorker

4. “…it all feels over-overwrought.” — Joanne Ostrow, Denver Post

5. “But at its worst, the show chokes on its own sanctimony.” — Alessandra Stanley, New York Times

6. “…a baffling free-fall in which plot exists almost solely to support the political and cultural points Sorkin wants to make, often in non sequitur monologues.” — Mary McNamara, Los Angeles Times

7. “Either Sorkin is no longer able to write credible women characters, or he no longer wants to.” — James Poniewozik, TIME

8. “…a dramatically inert, infuriating mess…” — Maureen Ryan, Huffington Post

9. “…a talky and tedious sendup of TV news, in a room stacked with self-obsessed blowhards.” — Howard Kurtz, Daily Beast

10. Sorkin’s “ideas are starting to feel a little crusty. He was never a revolutionary, but he didn’t used to feel like such old news.” — Richard Lawson, The Atlantic
Disappointing if it’s really that bad. I’ve heard a couple of the promo interviews and thought it sounded interesting. That world is ripe for dramatization and Sorkin’s “ripped from the headlines” episodes and, as a reformed news junkie, I was interested to see how it played out.

I’m one of the three people who enjoyed Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Sorkin’s short-lived take on the behind-the-scenes action at a sketch comedy show. I know it suffered from coming out at the same time as 30 Rock but, in a world where 30,000 crime procedurals are able to co-exist, I would have thought that there was room for two shows about sketch comedy.

Sorkin’s stuff can have a sameness to it with a lot of the dialogue sounding like (what I imagine are) the arguments in Sorkin’s head. When it works it’s snappy stuff but it can get preachy.

Did anyone see The Hour with Dominic West? looked like a Madmen era version of Newsroom.
