I recall the urban legend conversation where he told George Lucas how shitty the dialogue was. Sir Alec Guiness was reputedly irritated that after such a storied career SW was what most people remembered him from

Yet HF was happy to inflict a horrific 4th Indiana Jones movie on us.

As for Alec Guiness not much sympathy there. He said all that and still came back for two fucken sequels!

Yep. I read at the time that he was on a percentage.

    That would do it.

If you count numerous Hammer Horror films and Sherlock Holmes as classical. Though I suppose he must have done some stage work before all that.

Well a generation remembered them for their work in Star Wars. I'm not exactly sure what the problem is.

Well back then they weren’t the massive cultural experiences they are considered to be now. I can imagine back in 1977 those making Star Wars only saw it as a silly sci fi film that might make a few bucks.
Even Lucas didn’t think it would come to much. Only guy who did was Steven Speilberg. Could be wrong but think I read somewhere he made a bet with Lucas over its success or not. His prize was a couple percent of the box office Star Wars (New Hope) made.

@virgil Lucas took a substantially smaller cut to make the film. The stroke of genius was getting all the merchandising rights solely IIRC. alt text

Yup, but he thought Speilbergs close encounters of the third kind which was being made at the same time would do better. So he wagered a 2.5% cut of the box office on his film against Speilbergs, thinking Star Wars would flop and close encounters would do better.

Much like what happened with Han and Luke

Just watching Empire Strikes Back. What an absolute cracker of a film.

With reference to an early discussion, I would note that Wedge brought down a walker. So the guy saved Luke's life in 4, downed a walker in 5 and along with Lando destroyed the Death Star in 6. Impressive resume. Crazy there was never a Wedge toy. Even the farking Rancor keeper had a toy.

It's an absolute cracker of a flick. Probably the best of the lot which says a lot.

Wedge achieved more in the movies than this bunch here combined....so yeah, why no toy?
