@virgil Lucas took a substantially smaller cut to make the film. The stroke of genius was getting all the merchandising rights solely IIRC.
Cha ching
Yup, but he thought Speilbergs close encounters of the third kind which was being made at the same time would do better. So he wagered a 2.5% cut of the box office on his film against Speilbergs, thinking Star Wars would flop and close encounters would do better. -

Just watching Empire Strikes Back. What an absolute cracker of a film.
With reference to an early discussion, I would note that Wedge brought down a walker. So the guy saved Luke's life in 4, downed a walker in 5 and along with Lando destroyed the Death Star in 6. Impressive resume. Crazy there was never a Wedge toy. Even the farking Rancor keeper had a toy.

It's an absolute cracker of a flick. Probably the best of the lot which says a lot.
Wedge achieved more in the movies than this bunch here combined....so yeah, why no toy?

Dont spoil it for him, he was on another SW moan.
BTW, I watched ESB a few weeks ago and although I love the movie, some of the dialogue and acting is as painful to watch as the ones derided.
Han and Leia in the ice tunnels looks like they did one take, decided it was too cold and left it at that.
As for Luke the whiny little bitch with Yoda.....Point is, it's a great watch despite all that yet any recent movie gets picked apart so much to find fault.

All Star Wars is absolutely great. You can eat a massive bag of cocks if you dont agree with that statement 100% but every single episode without exception has some hammy acting and dialogue. People do tend to forget episodes 4-6 are just as guilty as any for this.

@mn5 I was 5 for SW, and about 10 by the time ROTJ rocked up. They were awesome, shitty dialogue, ploy holes, ewoks and all. And they had no competition compared to sci fi movies these days. It was the franchise that started it all. I'm sure kids of that age seeing the new stuff for the first time think it's cool too

It's part of the charm really. A perfect movie would be less memorable and harder to love.

You had to be there in 1977. I was only a kid then too but I remember going to see Star Wars at the theatre. In fact, my friends and I saw it twice!
Yeah mate. Everytime the music starts and the words roll up the screen I'm a kid again

Kids today don’t know what they are missing
Growing up in the early 80’s as a kid was defined by a single event. Star Wars, well 3 single events. Episodes IV, V and VI.
Back then you had to see them at the movies as often as you could if you wanted to catch them. Not this YouTube, DVD, or iTunes shit. Often too your local small town theatre wouldn’t show it till it finished in the big city 6 months later.
VHS came about in time for Jedi but even then you had to wait a year after it’s run at the cinema finished. -

I still watch them all on a regular basis, the mrs buys me Star Wars boxers fur Xmas, Father’s Day, socks too.
Oh and I’ve spent a fucken fortune on Lego sets too including this wee thingThat falcon is awesome.
I'm sure others will agree how awesome it is sharing it with the kids. Weekends with my boys are full of constant questions.....'Why were the Walkers on Hoth tougher than the ones on Scarif?.....why didn't Darth Vader figure out who his kids were earlier?....Who is Snoke?.....why did Kylo Ren lose a lightsaber fight to Rey?....why was Dooku so naive to Palpatines plans?" etcetc.....
I'm sure one day they'll get sick of my constant queries.
-
@virgil My primary school had two videos only - Star Wars and Mary Poppins, so once every two weeks we got to watch Star Wars on a Friday afternoon.
I don't know how we had Star Wars because I don't think they had videos to own back then.
Oh, and the prequels are just shitty, there's no getting around that. There may have been cheesy stuff/bad scripting/bad acting etc in the originals but not to the extent of the prequels. And the originals were fun. I tried watching the Phantom Menace a few months back and I felt like I was being punished.
The newest ones I've already watched multiple times.

Agree, I haven’t been able to sit through the prequels for years. A few good moments here and there but generally pretty shit. Just totally lacking the magic of the originals.

It’s huge too, nearly a meter long and over half a meter wide.
