@rancid-schnitzel was he the one lauding the French 9 for dummying from the base of a ruck and getting away with it, calling us 2 time RWC champs amongst other unknowledgable calls?

Yep. And he somehow mistook TJP for Smith 5 minutes after he was subbed.

Rankings for today's commentators: 1. Reflink; 2. Justin Marshall (even if just talking to himself somewhere out there!); ...3. Dumb and dumber.

About here in the thread posters are askjng who the beIN commentators were:

      1. Good question: do we know yet?
      2. I'm pretty sure I heard the antipodean comments dude call Slimani "the best prop in the world". Can those up North or who follow NH footy more than me comment?

TBF Slimani is usually technically better than any of the British (Isles) THs, with the possible exception of W P Nel. And also one of top two or three in France (not that I get to see enough Top 14 to be able to be sure). I don't think Gardner really knew what was going on. French were trying to tell him that Hames was pushing up and in (he was at 45 degrees in some scrums), which forced Slimani to push down to counter. His usual tactic is to bore in and lift.

One of my takeaways from this game is that Romano looks to be an excellent scrumming lock. Another is that we should be playing Matt Todd as often as possible

Not in front of Cane. He was awesome.

        But Todd >> Savea presently

I am wondering if we give Cane a run at 6 then? He kind of plays like 6.5 anyway. Physically punishing, may lose a little at line out and with ball carrying but I think those would be minor losses.

Not sure who the 2 comms are for Rugby pass, but they are muppets

Possibly the same ones we are getting in the UK for Premier Sports (which I had to sign up to just for one game, the fuckers).
For the first 20 minutes we just had the refs mike which was more entertaining

          He sounds posh Welsh

          Any ideas?

Really? WP Nel has to be one of the most overrated players. And I’d take Irelands Furlong over Slimani any day.

Gardner was a bit average alright though. Luckily our own kiwi ref had a decent game in Dublin.

That English fluffybunny commentator. What a grade A fuckwit! Reminded me of those English "fans" that you got popping up around 2003, probably thinks anyone brown in the ABs is poached. Among other doozeys, a couple of standouts for me:

              • Calling for Ofa to be sent off for cleaning out Vaamahina. Ignoring the fact Vaamahina just did the exact same thing.

              • Momentarily starting to ponder who had played well for the ABs when MOM was raised, only to immediately state no it has to go to a French player. They just had their score doubled you dickhead.

If we have too many more games with DMac and SBW both starting I'm going to need a new TV.

Todd shits on Savea at the moment.

Thought Taylor was excellent, massive improvement in him this year.

Pretty ghastly reading the amount of whinging about the ref in this thread. Had some not so flash moments but otherwise good. Funny to read people call SBW dumb for not knowing the rules, then immediately in uproar at a penalty try being awarded...is that irony?

              Adding in some pedantic complaints:

              • Mixing up the terms "inside" vs "outside" twice in the same play
              • A moment when they referred to "Read off Barrett", or similar (can't remember the actual players), when it was actually "Barrett off Read"
              • "dark science"... when talking about scrummaging. The term you're looking for is "dark arts", you fucking morons

And generally, as others have already mentioned

              • A constant flow of bullshit from their mouths, through RugbyPass, into my ears - which started bleeding about 10 minutes in - so I was struggling to hear the ref when he was having an interesting chat with the front rows at some point - due to the shit-and-blood clogging my eardrums

To be clear, I do think Furlong is clearly best (overall) TH in North. But in pure scrummaging terms I'd rate Ryan ahead, and Slimani. W P Nel was voted TH in last RWC XV, but haven't seem him playing in last year or so, much of which he's been injured for. Very much a scrummager, though: not seem too often in loose.

Jon Preston from a way back was about the last who doubled as a first five and halfback at the highest level that I can recall.

Just wondered if the French player was behind the kicker before the SBW slapback. I was expecting they might double check that before awarding the penalty try, but maybe my eyes deceived me.

I also wonder if TKB will be captain on Tuesday, as the choices seem limited.

@arhs there were several kicks they were well in front and that may have been one, harsh rule lesson for SBW.

I'm curious, anyone know why you cant bat the ball over the dead ball line, what is the point of the rule?

I mean what if you attempt to catch up, just get a finger to it and it goes dead, same result?

I'm curious, anyone know why you cant bat the ball over the dead ball line, what is the point of the rule?

I mean what if you attempt to catch up, just get a finger to it and it goes dead, same result?

I had this conversation on here with @antipodean I think. He came up with a reasonable reason I think.

@taniwharugby same reason you can't throw the ball out deliberately I guess. So no, accidental is not purposely putting the ball out of bounds.

Yep. All comes under the same law. Players cannot deliberately make the ball cross a touchline except by kicking it.

                                      Running out with it?

                                        doesn't really answer the question.

As for it being accidental and deliberate, plenty of other examples where this is purely on the ref (obviously in this, there was no disputing he did it deliberately)

I mean the only way the Frenchie scores in that game is if SBW isn't there, but he is, he is inches taller than the guy, so SBW was always going to get to the ball, he hasn't impeded the guy, hasn't done anything dangerous, just a mungo moment, making the rule removing him from the equation (which refs don't always apply anyway) just seems daft.

So the way the rule is written, for this instance (yes I know re-writing a rule for this scenario is daft and wont happen) the penalty is pretty extreme and disproportionate.

They were saying on the radio this same thing happened in a NZ v Ireland game when an Irishman batted the ball dead and we got the PT....

That's not to say I disagree with the deliberate throw or bat out being a penalty.

                                          Perhaps you mean "propel"?
