@Number-10 Falcon must have returned from the Brisbane Tens straight back to Havelock North for this weekend's tournament. I liked what I saw when he played in the Canes jersey, so not surprised he's this weekend's MVP.

Good prospect for this year's NZ U20s, even if Peter Umaga-Jensen is not injured for a change.

I hope he will be selected and gets game time. Surprised/disappointed that Emerson didn't get a call-up for the 7s camp in Mt Maunganui, unless that's due to Mitre 10 Cup commitments (like Koroi & Otago).

Time to pick up this topic again.

Today are the Napier OBM Invitational 7s at Tremain Field. Apparently, this tournament is now a qualifier for the National Club 7’s (Middlesex Country Wavell Wakefield Cup).

Interestingly, I just read in the HBT that Ellery Wilson is the new Hawke's Bay Sevens coach, together with Mark Ozich. Wilson is also the organiser of today's tournament. Not sure whether that means his playing days are over?

Thanks for posting the link. Not quite sure how to interpret the comment re the Axemen's "surprise semi-final defeat last year". Does it mean it was a surprise they lost or a surprise they made it that far? As someone that lives in a place with a panoramic birdseye view of their home ground (as well as spending far too much time down there) last year's result should be regarded as the latter as it was really just the first year of a rebuilding phase. I was down at the club on Thursday and it looks like they could well be travelling up without the four guys they currently have in the Wellington Representative 7s training group nevertheless either way I still hope my Texans deal to them in their Pool D clash which will leave me in an interesting position next time I am down there! They do have former Te Aute player Te Aranga Hakiwai and Joe Reid of Ngati Kahununu lineage (on his mothers side) amongst their lineup so they are players the Park Island spectators might recognize. Keep us informed of the results if you get a chance thanks.

Looking at those Philpott-like results does not do much to raise the spirits after the tripe served up to us at Mitre10 Cup level.

@higgins Really? Two close losses, 2 big wins, and only preseason. Still two weeks to go until the regional qualifiers. I'm more optimistic (or maybe I should say, less pessimistic) than at the start of the Mitre 10 Cup season.

Also good to see 5 schoolboys in the team, three of them Magpies signings.

I would consider losing to Wanganui something to be a tad more than disappointed about and "big wins" against what should be easybeats in Manawatu B (by 14) and Horowhenua (by a staggering 12) are nothing to shout from the roof tops about.

Returned from Southland? Or just back for sevens?

@number-10 Good question. When his signing with Southland was reported in the NZH, it literally said that he had "scored a contract with the Southland Stags for this season". That's all the info I have.

Hawke's Bay 7s teams for the Central Regionals tomorrow (9/12):

    Men's team :

    1 Ricky Hayes
    2 Cole Eru
    3 Damien Scott
    4 Trent Hape
    5 Ausage Fomai
    6 Mitchell Drew
    7 Ioane Lauano
    8 Samuela Kokosigasiga
    9 Al Momosea
    10 Christopher Johnston
    11 Tyrone Dodd-Edwards
    12 Jesse King

That looks like a seriously weak team! Tom Iosefo has been called up by Samoa for the Cape Town Sevens, but where's Emerson? Are they keeping Toala and McClutchie fresh for the World School Sevens next weekend? Haven't seen Fakatava play at all recently, maybe (still) injured? Neria Fomai is not in the Samoa squad, injured?

Also some names missing from our women's squad that I expected to see, while there's at least one Manawatu player on this list:

    1 Felicity Powdrell
    2 Niamh Jefferson
    3 Teilah Ferguson
    4 Jamie Julie Ferguson-Ngawaka (c)Heather
    5 Paige Lush
    6 Hope Hakopa
    7 Marlane Harmer
    9 Natasha-Dean Greville
    10 Danielle Pomare-Mackay
    11 Ruci Malanicagi
    12 Sincereley Horne
    13 Jamie Heather

I think we'll be lucky to qualify for the Nationals!

    First results:

HB Women lost 0 -31 to Manawatu (who fielded several Black Ferns)
HB Men 21 - 17 Wairarapa (Bay tries: Jesse King 2x, Mitch Drew)

Defence of both teams is big work-on!

    2nd Round results:

Hawke's Bay Women 5 - 22 Wellington Women (Bay try: Niamh Jefferson)
Hawke's Bay Men 19 - 28 Taranaki Men (Bay tries: Cole Eru, Al Momoisea, Tyrone Dodd-Edwards)

    3rd Round results:

Hawke's Bay Women 17 - 15 Poverty Bay Women (Bay tries: Ruci Malanicagi 2x, Hope Hakopa?)
Hawke's Bay Men 26 - 0 Wanganui Men (Bay tries: Mitch Drew 2x, Samuela Kokosigasiga, Ricky Hayes)

I missed a few scores, but I think the men have finished 2nd in their pool, and will now play the team finishing first in the other pool in the Cup Semi. I think that's Wellington, so expect our team to lose that. Wellington are clear favourites to win the tournament.

Edit: the Cup Semi against Wellington is at 4.00pm.

The women still have a pool game to play against Taranaki; they are still in it for the 3rd-4th place play-off.

Cup Semi-Final: Hawke's Bay Men 7 - 35 Wellington Men (Bay try: Cole Eru; con Hape)

No surprise. We'll now play for 3rd place at 5.20pm.

Manawatu join Wellington in the Final after Taranaki gave away a penalty close to their posts: 22 - 19.

Hawke's Bay Women 36 - 14 Taranaki Women (Bay tries: Ruci Malanicagi 2x, Teilah Ferguson, Niamh Jefferson 2x, Julie Ferguson-Ngawaka)

    3rd place play-off at 5.20pm: Hawke's Bay men v Taranaki men
3rd place play-off at 6.10pm: Hawke's Bay women v Poverty Bay women (on field 2, so not streamed)
