    @mn5
    I think I read somewhere the voice actor had already died. So they didn't have much choice with him.

    I loved it thought it was fun start to finish and on the edge of my seat for most of it.

    The only down side was Leia saving herself. Twice. First with her little space flight and then by letting purple hair crash the ship. Should have been Leia doing that.

    As for Snoke. I loved the scene in his throne room, and couldn't really care about his back story. I never knew the back story of the emperor when I was a kid but I was stoked when that evil bastard bought it.

    If Leia could fly herself back to the ship surely she could have used the force to pilot the star cruiser?

    Good point re the emperor. Before Phantom menace I never really gave him much thought.

    Now I think about it I'm gutted that old mate Admiral Akbar bagged it.

    But good to see Nien Nunb is still around. Not too many of the original characters left now (especially if Leia is actually declared dead in between 8 and 9)

    :::

    Why would Leia sacrifice herself when the point of the last two movies has been to look for the spark of hope for the galaxy? The presumption has been (from the rebellion pov that the spark can only come from Luke. Leia is the next best in their minds).
    I think there are a lot of innocuous lines/points in the last two movies that may all make sense in time. For starters this is the passing of the baton movie. Notice how a couple of times people were declaring Finn to be a hero. The galaxy is finding it's own new set of people to look up to and Rey will also now grow in legend.
    Kylo is the one with the most progressive story arc. Unlike Vader before him he was handed an opportunity to move away from the dark despite whatever he had done in the past. Once he removed Snoke from the picture though he realised he had created himself too big an opportunity for power than he could resist.

    There are still a couple of big plot holes though that have shown no inkling of being filled and are annoying me.

    One is what happened to the Knights of Ren? Luke mentioned that the rest of his pupils were either killed, were taken by Kylo or escaped. We have assumed that some became the KoR but this has never been confirmed. Of the ones that 'escaped', are they still alive? Will they be found by Rey?

    My biggest irk (and I know the answer is simply to progress the storyline) is R2s story.
    From the movies so far we know he was on the island with Luke when the shit hit the fan. We know that Luke went into hiding and that somehow R2 was gathering dust at Leia's HQ having shut down. How did he get there? Even if Luke sent him away on some form of transport by himself, it raises the whole map question.
    I'm happy to overlook this as a necessary plot device and enjoy the show for what it is. It has just stuck in my mind as an annoyance.

    One more thought while I am rambling. Anyone else notice how Kylo's ugly lightsaber was a bit more refined this time? I wondered if it is a symbol of his progression. It wouldn't surprise me if the next movie shows early on, Kylo igniting a smoothly functioning lightsaber.

    Just read an interesting tie in with Rogue One.
    When Jyn is searching through the Computer looking for the Death Star plans she is reading aloud and one of the files is 'Hyperspace Tracking'.

    Whether that was put in after the TLJ storyline was written or was pre-planned we don't know.

    Sometimes they do try a bit hard to be clever though. Guess who says 'I have a bad feeling about this' in TLJ? You didn't hear anyone say it? It was apparently fricken BB-8 in the opening scene.

    Especially when they had the perfect moment for it, on the bridge of chasing Star Destroyer when General Pink Hair was about to go to light speed.

    Speaking of original characters the Casino scene woulda been more memorable if Lando was there dominating one of the tables.

    Watched it a third time and still liked it.

    Other than one scene that has already been mentioned I think the movie has a decent balance of nostalgia and unexpected action.

    The ‘personal sacrifice’ elements had more of a Star Trek feel to it but nothing that I didn’t mind.

    I broadly liked it, but it felt a bit too long.

    Worst things were Leia's Mary Poppins impression to get herself back to the ship after being blown off the bridge, ridiculous.

    Also too much gravity in space. "Bombing" runs at the Dreadnaught? Artillery shooting in parabolic arcs? Come on.

    Whole casino part was stupid. It's a shame as exploring the idea that there are even worse people than the First Order, i.e. those that profit from war regardless of the sides, could've been interesting.

    @tewaio yes, the Mary Poppins thing was way out of place. Katherine Kennedy has described what they wanted but that was the most corny way of doing it. A shot from the ship looking out and a determined Leia pulling herself back toward the door through the force would have looked way less corny.
    SW has always expected you to ignore physics regarding space battles but without that we wouldn't even have TIE fighter sounds

    I read the casino thing as telling us that the reason the First Order had been allowed to rise was because many people were getting rich off the conflict

    It’s called multi tasking. First viewing was a night out with the fellas for the 12:01 am opening night. Then took two of my kids the night after for a 9pm. Then the last one was date night with the missus for a 10pm.

    2nd viewing yesterday after Xmas shopping. Rose has not grown on me, put it that way. Poe is a pretty poor actor. Admiral purple hair is a dick. Casino scene still stupid. Hux still a bitch.

    Movie is awesome though. Hopefully catch it again over the break.

    @virgil i think there are enough holes for people to have a go at without necessarily not enjoying the experience overall.

    :::

    Space flying Leia is pretty fucking stupid. Hux is honestly terrible. The entire Casino story line is needless, and actually brings the whole movie down.

    I don't understand the need to introduce ANOTHER kick ass female general just to kill her off at the end.

    :::

    I'm not sure which new female character I hated more. Purple hair or Asian. They both suuuuuccckkkked in my opinion. Finn and Rose are definitely THE worst duo in SW history and as others have said the Casino scene definitely the most pointless ( perhaps tied with Saw Guerara in Rogue One ).

    All that being said there were obviously awesome scenes too. Best probably the fight with the Red Guards.

    praetorian guards, how hard is it to call them by their real names...

    yeah nothing tops Ani and Natalie Portman in terms of 100% lacking chemistry as a pair.

    Wrong. At least Annie and Padme were kinda central to the plot. Finn and Rose are pointless tokens at best. Black Guy and Asian chick. Way to be politically correct Star Wars writers.

    I think there's another section of this forum for that kind of response?

    Bit silly to consider one of the main characters of the new trilogy a token at best.

    Ok Finn less so but Rose? Waste of space....

    I'm on record as saying I would rather they kept her sister around- for Jegga type reasons and I don't think much of that part of the storyline, but it was just storyline, bad storyline, but storyline nonetheless.

    Sigh , this is what it’s come too.

    Don’t know how to do spoilers so you may want to scroll past my rant.

    Interesting reading the reviews here, just saw it myself.
    I didn’t mind Hux, if the dark side are Nazis he reminded me of some of the scheming little bitches they had like Himmler that weren’t actually all that brave or clever but had a bit of power they didn’t deserve.

    Leia Poppins sucked . A lot . I’m sure there’s a few memes of it doing the rounds already.

    Weird to see Laura Dern in a film like that, haven’t seen her inanything for a while and thought she was ok . Every time I see her I think of her playing with a pile of dinosaur shit though.

    Also didn’t mind the casino part that much either, looked great on the big screen with the animals doing the running of the bulls dealing to the arms dealers .

    However Finn needs to die in the first two minutes of the next movie, and take Rose with him. Ffs , he bores the shit out of me whenever he’s on screen .
    Speaking of deaths Snoke dying was a nice surprise, didn’t see that coming at all . The fight with the guards afterwards was epic too. It’s going to be interesting to see how they resolve Ren and Reis plot line .

    Also OSH would shut down most of the workspaces on their ships, you can master jumping to light speed but can’t put a guard rail around the four story hole in the floor? It’s about hazard elimination people , we all have to work together to achieve a safe workplace.

    And lastly killing off the hot Asian and keeping the munter displeases me immensely.
