I travelled through Norway for three weeks once (35 years ago) without spending a kroner.
Not from choice though. I entered from northern Finland and had been in the country for two weeks before I got to a town that had a bank. Then even when I did have cash every person that picked me up (hitching) gave me a meal. I met someone in Narvik who offered me a hotel room in Oslo in exchange for work. So it wasn't a conscious bludge just serendipity and never did I ask for something.
As for anyone repeating the same in Asia - fucking entitled tossers. Pontificate as much as you like about saving the planet - you're just scum. There's a difference between doing it on the cheap and being a burden on a society that can't afford it.
It's like some tourists who want to haggle down the price of every single thing as a badge of honour. I enjoy a good barter as much as the next person, but there comes a point when you're arguing about 30 cents when you're just demeaning yourself.
I hope these fucking hippies get repeated punctures and fuck off ASAP

Stuff shut comments down and then reopened them. Judging by the hate in the comments I’d imagine the clown will be shaving his beard after that article, there probably isn’t a soup kitchen in the country now that isn’t aware of them and what they are up to . Hopefully they get shunned and made to full price wherever they go now, totally cool with them eating out of dumpsters though especially if there’s used nappies in the next one they dive into.
The behaviour of these sorts of people doesn’t really surprise me much each any more but bludging off people who have less than you is a new low.

I know a guy, half French half Australian (ABC*), who regularly travels around dumpster diving etc. He's the most tiresome person I've come across. Anyway, he's like those two tossers in that he doesn't have to do it, but does. He always returns to his parents house with a horde of friends to stay for a week at a time.
His brother is hippy-ish like him but such a nice guy and is happy to actually pay his own way and his parents are actually awesome.

He's a reactionary bigot who hides behind "I was only taking the piss - don't you have a sense of humour?" If only what he wrote was occasionally funny or he hadn't undermined that argument by a succession of fits of piqué over the years.
Quite why NBR choose to have him as a columnist is beyond me. Surely he and his opinions are irrelevant today. He's George Wood with a slightly better turn of phrase

NBR were about the only news outlet he hadn’t fallen out with , he was hidden behind a paywall too. The article wasn’t funny , the one about having a Gareth Morgan statue was great though. In the 70s before he fell out with the evening post he discovered the horoscopes were written by the most junior reporter and then passed on to the next. He offered to do it and would put in random weird stuff until he started putting in things like “ true love awaits you in Westport, you must go immediately “ at which point they took the job off him and gave it back to the junior reporter.
I don’t agree he’s a bigot though, he tries to offend every race , creed , religion or sexuality he possibly can . His schtick is just pretty old and dated now.
