it feels like we have reached a point where the exodus has just moved into another gear. I think we have done a great job of keeping talent in NZ over the last 20 years but wonder how long we will be able to do so?

The NZR and our partners are in an arms race we cant win basically and the whole SH is suffering and our competitons are diminishing which affects revenues which speeds up the process of players leaving. Catch 22

I dont think there is an answer either unless we get a sheikh who wants to invest in NZ rugby! I am not sure we can stop this. In fact, I know we won't be able to. People, of all walks of life, chase the money, always have, always will.

How long will this take? when will NZ's best be playing in France. A Kieran Reid or a Richie McCaw moving to France in his prime could force a policy change from the NZR and then we are not in kansas anymore toto.

I hate the idea where rugby follows football and all the best players are in Europe and euro club rugby becomes the highest quality in the game, more than the world cup.

Sorry to be so depressing but it is depressing.

@dagrubster That's along the lines of what I was saying a few weeks ago.

To help avoid the endgame of rugby being a Euro sport, we all need to be a bit more hostile to guys taking cash over country!

      you cant blame players.

do you be hostile towards world rugby, european leagues? they are the ones undermining our game.

i dont think anyone is to blame, its market forces really

          @dagrubster I blame them all. 🙂

The players all have a choice, though and I outlined my manifesto for them joining the exodus a few weeks back.

Basically, if they go with the AB coach's blessing, then fine (with the proviso that the AB coach needs to be realistic about who we need to retain).

OE. Not all these moves are money orientated, some people just want to go check out a diff lifestyle. Your 26, fringe AB, younger faster talent being talked about ... all your mates have gone to Europe for s while ...

I'm in a France right now, I'd have loved to live here.

Yep. Every silicon valley fuck knuckle that want to buy a chunk of NZ as a bolt-hole should be made to pay an AB tax whereby they have to pay the contract of a player chosen by NZR.

And get Julian Savea on pay by performance...

Jordan Taufua won't join Lyon OU. He should stay in NZ. He's been promised by S Hansen that he will have a chance to show he's a contender for the RWC in 2019.

Great that he's staying...but I find it hard to fathom he's in the reckoning...

Then again if Ardie is considered good enough and eight cover, I wouldn't see too much difference between him and Taufua.

Then again if Ardie is considered good enough and eight cover, I wouldn't see too much difference between him and Taufua.

Apart from about 2 feet in height.

@crucial we can't be sure about Taufua's hair beneath that headgear.

So Hansen says something to Taufua, Taufua says something to a reporter, the reporter writes an article in French and then that gets translated back into English on here.

I suspect Hansen said Taufua 'has a chance' rather 'will get a chance'

Assuming that the French media didn't completely make up negotiations between Taufua's agent and Lyon, it's more likely that someone from Lyon was told "something" by Taufua's agent (which may have included a reference to a conversation with Hansen) and that that person from Lyon misinterpreted it and talked to the French media. I seriously doubt Taufua or his agent have talked to French reporters directly.

Anyway, IMO he's a very good SR player and I hope he'll stay in NZ for a bit longer. It's no secret I do rate the guy (more than the 2017 version of Ardie and Squire) and I think he should (and hope he will be) considered in the way suggested by @Crucial.

As nobody knows for sure whether a conversation has taken place between Taufua and Hansen, and even less what has been said and in which wording, I'm not going to put words in Hansen's mouth. Everything is pure speculation.

Funny, it is usually articles claiming 'I've never heard from the AB coaches' that circulate when players (or coaches) head off...
