Movies you like that are universally disliked and panned
I've watched Meet Joe Black I don't know how many times...
I had a thing for Claire Forlani in the late 90s so I've seen it a few times as well. I still laugh every time Pitt gets smacked.

@antipodean that's a good movie! How fucking hot is Forlani in it?

I've always found her to be at her hottest in Mallrats, then she started getting skinnier.

Anyone seen Black Panther yet? Is it overhyped?
Creaming it in the box office, made more in its opening 4 day weekend then DC’s Justice League made in its entire domestic run. (US box office)
Proving yet again how far ahead the MCU is ahead of DCs

Black Panther is drawing the weirdos up to the edge of their echo chambers.
If you don't love it, you hate black people apparently. Saw an article labeling it "Shakespeare". It might be the greatest movie ever according to some. White supremacists were apparently down rating it on websites before it even got to previews, and claiming it is racist or something (not clear on the details).
But apparently its so great to FINALLY have a black comic book hero on screen, according to some.
Riiiiiiiiight.

@nta I don't read the stuff from either side (I usually find out about it on the Fern), I just go watch the movie.
Apparently the movie The Promise is the best example of the stupidity of internet rating of movies. It had a middle-ish rating on IMDB as the Armenian's were up-voting it and the Turkish were down-voting it. This was well before the movie had been released.

@nepia yeah I just see the headlines and sometimes the byline if it turns up in a search or SM feed.
I avoid reading in detail because I don't want my expectations set. I think it'll be pretty good, because MCU don't tend to piss about with these things.
It'll do well to keep up with Ragnarok, because that was extremely entertaining in a humorous sense, which I dig. But as long as its entertaining in whatever sense, I don't really care.

I liked it, some stuff annoyed me with it, like any superhero film, plus I think the 'bad guy' is a way more charismatic actor than the good guy. And the visuals were mostly great. I actually think it needs a second watch. My second watch confirmed to me how good Thor was, my second watch of Justice League I thought a lot less of it (I didn't love it first time round but thought it was an ok switch off your brain film).
I tend to never read anything about a movie until after I've seen it.
It does look like BP is going to outstrip Thor in box office though - it's cruised to 400m.

Watched that 3 Billboards movie last night.
Pretty good, great acting, storyline everything.
4 racist cops out of 5 homophobic cops.

The wife and I were tired the other night so chucked on an Adam Sandler movie on Netflix as a "mindless comedy" to watch. Mindless is right, but it was pretty fucking far from a comedy. He is genuinely taking the piss with those Netflix movies, that was the worst steaming pile of shit I've ever tried to watch, could only last 20 minutes. I can't remember what it was called and don't want to know, but if you have an inkling to watch ANY of his newer movies... DON'T.
-
@no-quarter all downhill since the classic Happy Gilmore!

It's only fair you provide a title to warn us off.
But then, may jus avoiding all Sandler movies is sufficient...

Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison, Waterboy... those were all great mindless comedies. Apparently he actually doesn't give a shit anymore, just makes movies with his mates and doesn't care if they are any good, which would explain the drop off.
@crucial yeah avoiding them all is probably a good idea, but this one was called Sandy Wexler... fucking 2 hours 10 minutes of (I assume, I turned it off) complete and utter crap.
-
@no-quarter I've not seen that, but I didnt think that was supposed to be a comedy??
I liked the Wedding Singer too

Black Panther
Pretty cool movie. Some awesome ideas in there that will no doubt set up Wakanda as a key player during Infinity war.
Some of the scoring was weird e.g. on the Ancestral Plane there was some string work that was jarring and a bit weird for a chilled-out African nirvana.
But whatever - it was fighty and explodey and techy. Also had some decent humour in it, but didn't try to overdo it.
4 Mountain Gorilla Dudes out of 5 weird lip-thingy River Tribe.
:::
There were a few things that gave me the shits about it:
- "Nah mate, fuck off. You missed challenge day but jeez we could use you for an overseas agent"
- Let's conceal the murder of a Wakandan Prince by his own brother overseas
- Let's ALSO conceal the fact that said Prince pulled a fucking gun on his fellow citizens
- But most of all: let's NEVER tell his son the truth.

@taniwharugby I enjoyed this, Woody is mostly quality these days and McDormand is always awesome. But I thought Rockwell was outstanding. He's almost a police version of his Green Mile character.
Was kind of diet Coen brothers so 3.5 Hail Caesars out of a possible 4 Men of Constant Sorrow.
