I have just read an article by Andrew Webster about the appointment of Castle. Interesting to note that he mentions that Pocock was still being paid his $820K salary while taking a "gap year" to play rugby in Japan. If you are bleeding money it doesn't make sense to pay any player who is fit but isn't available to play for your national team.

That being said, I am sure BFA is still paid his NZR salary while on a sabbatical. The same for BBBR during his personal leave.

They will be on their retainers but miss out on all of the extras.
As for Pocock that’s a crazy sum to start with

@crucial BBBR would be compassionate leave, so wouldnt think there'd be much 'extras' he would be denied

@kiwimurph Makes sense - they need the injection of revenue it would bring. One wonders what they'd squander it on next time.

The economics have shifted since Australia won the 2003 hosting rights - between the hosting fee going up and public interest on a massive wane I'm not sure it is the slam dunk of a tournament you might think.

No 'slam dunk' as they're unlikely to be defending world champions, but a healthy injection into the coffers regardless.

Contrary to popular belief, Pocock isn't being paid while having a year off, it's just how he packaged his deal. Otherwise he would have been remunerated the same total value but across the two years he played.

@antipodean given the last few years for our club they'd barely touch the sides.

And in the new season of "How to Fuck a Rugby Club Until It Dies":

                      1. Despite lowering our rego fees to $150 (includes shorts and socks) I've still got guys saying "Aw prez can we pay $5 a week?" in a 14-week season. I will let you guess their cultural background.

                      2. The local Council have decided that our ground - and 33 others for various sports - need to be shut all of March for maintenance. Season starts 2nd week of April.

                      3. I lined up another ground to share with a soccer club temporarily, after two other clubs didn't want to know. Was going to chip in a bit to help them cover their leasing costs. This was with a different Council, who had rejected my advances when approached directly. Anyway, the Council caught wind of it, said to the soccer guys NO GET FUCKED NO SUB-LETTING OR WE FUCK YOUR SOCCER CLUB AS WELL!

I'm starting to think that this just isn't meant to be

@mikedogz given we only train once a week and have Saturdays from midday, we are only about $1500 per year.

It's the fucking idiocy of mowing the grass too short, and doing maintenance in the preseason for every winter sport, that gets me.

Start of NSW Suburban (Subbies) Rugby season today.

We're back in 5th Division in a 2-Grade comp (2nd Grade optional). Today we'll face off against last year's 6th Division finalists, who fall into the "optional" piece, Manly Savers. They've got a few ex-Premier players no doubt and have been a stalwart in 6th Division pretty much forever.

I expect we'll have a tough day of it, but at least its only 1 game, and maybe some of our Islanders will show up and make a contest of it?

I've already seen that a 6th Division club forfeited their opening round game. They used to be a top-division side, but then the demographics changed and they have had disciplinary issues the last decade or so ongoing. Last year they were in the Halligan Cup which is a "maybe this week" setup you can slap a team together and get yourselves going again. So these are not good signs.

Such is the nature of rugby here, if they forfeit again we'll be reaching out to them and asking if they just want to come play for us this year. I need players as well.

@nzzp I'm good for today. Only having to run one Grade is amazingly stress-free! We should have numbers, and I'm not bothered by the result.

I'm worried about the state of the game generally though. What I'm hearing from guys in rural rugby here and NZ is troubling.

Club registration per year is set at $150 - includes shorts, socks, all the game day physio, and free food post-match back at our pub for home games.

Still got blokes asking if they can pay by the week. Wtf??
