It's not too hard to see why test cricket is fucked. SA v Aus is a massive series. And no one turned up. No one turned up to watch SA v India either. No one turns up in NZ to watch tests. Not many turn up to watch in Aus unless it's England, or the Indian fans to watch India. Why would administrators schedule tests when they don't make any money from it. It's dead.

As for the game, Aus 225/5 when bad light stopped play. As usual Smith and Warner have top scored with a 50 each.

This post is depressing and accurate. I love good test cricket but I do worry it is gonna cease to exist at some stage.

Fuck having to wrestle your vice captain away into a dressing room because he doesn't have enough self control when your team is one wicket away from smashing South Africa!

Clever sound bite coaching for scripted telly interviews doth not maketh the man

I'm a sucker and old fashioned, so I looked up the spirit of cricket.
          https://www.lords.org/mcc/mcc-spirit-of-cricket/what-is-mcc-spirit-of-cricket/spirit-of-cricket-preamble-to-the-laws/
          4. The Spirit of the Game involves RESPECT for:
Your opponents ... Your own captain ... The game's traditional values

          and
          5. It is against the Spirit of the Game:
To direct abusive language towards an opponent or umpire.. To indulge in cheating or any sharp practice

And then I thought about the Aussies, and how they apparently play within the spirit of cricket (but headbutt 'the line').

Yeah. Effective, but ugly, and I think it's against the spirit of the game. That's thei choice, and I don't have a huge issue with them being pork chops, just pretending to be saints who uphold the spirit of the game while abusing anyone who gets in their way.

          Screw those guys.

How do they 'pretend to be saints'? They are generally pretty open about liking some chat on the field. They assure us they know where the line is, which is proven incorrect on a regular basis, but still.

@barbarian Likely that view goes back to the Phil Hughes tragedy and some of the stuff spouted then. Time to move on methinks.

To be fair looking at the cctv footage seems almost a non event. I was expecting punches thrown etc, was very underwhelming tbh

Is it wishful thinking but I kind of imagine a McGrath v Sarwon scenario where the Aussie goes personal, cops a personal one back and loses plot because it "crosses the line" / he's an immature prat.

Happy to dish it out, can’t take it when it’s thrown back. ( not just picking on Davy dumb dumb, I’m sure this applies to several cricketers)

David Warner is such a complete cockstain. The way he carries on is a complete, or at least should be, a complete embarrassment. Describing cricket as "war" before the Ashes? jesus fuck David.

Lo and behold, once the claims and counter-claims come out, it's looking very much like personal shit one way, personal shit the other way, and explosion, and yes, sounding very Glen McGrath-ish. Davey has to know that sledge is always going to come if he pushes, why can't he let it go?

Steve Smith's "explanation" should be re-worded for honesty. "we believe we play our best cricket when we are being abusive assholes on the field" You're not being "aggressive", you're being abusive knowing full well there will be no physical retribution.

And before any Aussies jump on the "it's not just us" bandwagon, i am well aware of that. Not many other sides take such public pride in it though.

Warner is such a cock. He's also a great player. The Warner Paradox is those two facts exist in a symbiotic relationship - his cock-ness is necessary for his greatness.

The evidence suggests he plays his best when he's a total dick. The Bull who bullies opposition bowlers, umpires and small children. He plays like he lives - gets on the front stool and belts the ball, and doesn't give a shit about what people think.

He's one of those unique characters that exist very rarely across all sports. Aussie cricket does have a habit of producing them - I reckon Hayden and McGrath are two others who fit this mould as well. Steve Waugh maybe, but he was a little bit less brash.

I'd argue that in this side currently he's the only real cnt. Lyon and the quicks have their moments, but nobody commits to the persona like our Davey.

Fuck I hate that name, too. Have you ever met a decent bloke who people call Davey?
