With the first Test starting on March 22 at Auckland (Day/Night match), here's a good article on the scoring rate in Test cricket for batsmen.

Imagine the thrill of seeing Geoff Boycott and Bruce Edgar seeing off the new ball back in the day.

Edgar & Wright - champions. Imagine watching them see off the new ball without the distractions of Wi-Fi, data, more than two TV channels, or without a ground announcer with the attention spell of a goldfish blasting music out between deliveries. Enthralling stuff.

Good article. That final list lines up well with my knowledge of attacking batsmen as opposed to sloggers going back through history.

I do remember being out and about all day a few years back, coming home and sitting down for a bit of Oz vs India and Rahul Dravid was sitting pretty on 5 off 66 balls. God bless, What a throwback!!

Back to the subject at hand though this series should be a cracker. Only two tests though, great fucken organisation as usual NZ cricket.

I was never sure that they realised there was another new ball after 80 overs. Then again maybe they were always planning on seeing that one off too.

Boo to lose Santner when he's hit form again. Would have rather seen Sodhi than Astle. And have to say, that bowling line up is very sameish.

I'm pretty happy with that team. The Wag is very effective in the longest form. Also Ravel is ridiculously consistent, no big scores but fuck all failures either.

No batting cover in that squad so Nicholls retained at 5. Be interesting to see what happens if Guptill shows some form in the two warm up games.

@cyclops Nicholls' retention doesn't seem too surprising - I'd have been a lot more surprised if he'd been dropped.

If Worker is injured, I'm not sure who the next cab off the rank would be - Nelson's Greg Hay?!! πŸ™‚

                          http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/records/batting/most_runs_career.html?id=12046;type=tournament

Very few stellar performances in this lot - the top 8 are mainly very familiar names and unlikely contenders. A bit further down are Worker and Cleaver, with decent averages.

And a bit further down from them is Jeet averaging 19. Let's hope the pitches have been dogs! πŸ™‚

Overall, a pretty predictable team once Santner is removed. Astle over Ish is probably the only selection that took longer than a minute and it's perhaps not surprising given that Ish chucks a roughie into the mix pretty frequently, so he's going to struggle to build pressure in tests.

You forgot being able to walk out onto the ground during the lunch interval and prognosticate knowingly about the wicket

Sit on the ground to watch as long as you were outside the ropes

Flashy batsmen scoring runs merely interrupts the serious stuff of a day at a Test

With Boycott etc there was nothing to distract you from:

Building your pyramid of beer cans
                            Destroying other peoples pyramids

As always I think it's the case of having a spinner for the sake of having a spinner.

If Worker is injured, I'm not sure who the next cab off the rank would be - Nelson's Greg Hay?!! πŸ™‚

As always I think it's the case of having a spinner for the sake of having a spinner.

Lucky there's genuine class amongst quite a number of the other players....

I think they've picked Matt Henry to give the prospect of a four (in fact five) -pronged seam attack if the pitch warrants it.

Sometimes you have to play a spinner regardless of whether he's a world-beater.

It will be Henry or Astle.

                                          Colin's last four test scores are 57, 105, 58 and 22.
