The question of direction from off field has not been addressed at all. Surprised that CA think (hope) that journalists will not pursue that.

Based on that, how the fuck is anyone meant to believe that the fast bowlers didn't know that this was happening? I call major bullshit (I was calling it earlier - inside my head). If we are talking sandpaper, it must be fucking more than obvious. Noo, he's just a really good ball-worker.... uh huh. Fuck them too for trying to act all "we didn't know".

@gt12 I suppose their only defence is that the umpires inspected the ball as well and couldn't detect the fact that it was tampered with.

@akan004 but the umpires aren’t looking at the ball every delivery. Maybe the bowlers were ignorant (or wilfully so) but it’s suspicious.

And where did the sand paper come from if this plan was hatched on the fly? Nipped down to the hardware store in the lunch break?

I very much doubt it was hatched on the fly but sandpaper in the kit bag for use on bats isn't a big stretch and may go some way to explain why they were so dumb to use bright yellow stuff.

    What did Langer do?

Aside from the bizzare incident in Sri Lanka with Samaraweera where he snuck a bail off?

The niggler in chief and was the first of the holier-than-thou who would talk up in the media the spirit of cricket on one hand and then do the complete opposite. Even Ponting found the irony. Very much the give it out, but can't take it attitude you see from Lehmann, Warner et al today. You don't find yourself under the lid at short leg as a senior player for no reason.

Seems very harsh on Warner if all he did was say "Lets try and use sandpaper to rough the ball up. Maybe try it like this Cameron, I'm not really sure how to use the sandpaper exactly, because this is definitely the first time any of us have attempted this and your guess is as good as mine."

Obviously he is the scalp they want for many other reasons, but the pieces simply don't fit based on their narrative.

Did the investigation speak with the host broadcaster or SA team to identify why they were tipped off about this before the test for example?

@calf That's a good point that you raised. I suppose the integrity officer's review has failed as very few if any believe that the findings accurately represents what happened that day.

    This version makes sense though

Warner: that De Kock prick is still in and everyone is watching me carefully to see what I do. I obviously can't use my normal tricks on the ball so lets get Cam to do it. He is at mid on and we can relay the ball through him.

The broadcasters were tipped of because of how early the Aussies were getting the ball to reverse.

Official line is that Boof did send a message to the field but it was along the lines of "WTF is going on?"

The ICC needs to step in now and expunge a good chunk of Smith’s tear record. Nothing extreme, half his test 100’s abs knock about 15 runs off his average....
Least that will stop the whole next Bradman bullshit.

🤣 Yeah that'll work. Because his runs scored are directly affected by his fielding side's conduct.

Honestly, that is bogan response of the day, right there.

I can buy the 'first time' narrative, for two reasons:

    • As per Geoff Lemon a few pages back, Warner had been pushed to breaking point this series. He had developed a siege mentality, and had lost all sight of reality. He was completely desperate and it pushed him to take actions he had never taken before.

    • It's so stupid. I find it hard to believe they have been using this tactic before, given how quickly it was picked up. And I also imagine people are now combing over the footage from the Ashes, looking for clues. Clearly they haven't found much.

Were they tampering in other ways before? Probably. The same as everyone else - weird shining agents, bouncing the ball on throws etc. But that pales into comparison as to what they were caught doing at Newlands.
