I'm two episodes in to Altered Carbon. Did anyone else have a problem understanding a word that is being said? Why does everybody have to fucking mumble?

Starts really well with lots of fights/explosions etc and once I realised it didn't have a compelling story I gave up. Subtitles did help I have to admit.

i love the books, so i am going to give it a lot of rope.

And there is enough tits and violence to make up for a fair amount of short comings.

Just speak the fuck up! i turn it up to hear, and then a fight starts and the whole room shakes.

@mariner4life I watched it through, and thought it was decent, but yeah I turned the subtitles on, which I seem to do often lately, and aint cos I have hearing issues, alot of shows and movies seem to do that, loud AF for fights and shooting and shit, then quiet talking

There is genuinely a litany of shows out there, they need to grab you early and keep you entertained. Altered Carbon shot it's load too early.

Remember that SS GB last year? Had great promise and a shit ton spent on it but was panned by the public after the first ep for the mumbled dialogue posing as realism. The producers hurriedly tried a remix to bring the voices forward but it wasn't good enough and the damage had been done anyway.

Must be the latest film school trend but the evidence is strong that it doesn't go down well with the greater audience.

My other old man gripe is deliberately under lighting to create 'mood'. If I can't hear what is going on at least let me see FFS!

The problem with SS-GB is that it's first hour was boring as shit - not the speaking. TBH, I don't remember having an issue with the speaking when watching it.

I don't think it's a recent film school thing (as someone who has recently been working in one) and most of the show runners are more middle aged.

One of the problems the BBC say causes the overall sound issue is that producers and sound editors were working in quality studios and also using headphones. It is when the show is on a standard TV set against a wall in a random living room that the issue shows up.
Back in a day when I used to do sound work for bands one of the things you used to do in the studio was play the song back on a transistor radio speaker. It had to sound good on that and spectacular on a good sound system or cans. Got to make it work at the lowest end as well as the top.

    Cunk on Britain.

So many great lines crammed into an episode.

'It's hard to believe that only a thousand years ago this empty field was actually interesting'
On Romans introducing baths to Britain - “like when someone opens an artisan bakery in Hull"

    Barry was watchable but mediocre.

One of the women in it is so unattractive that she's distracting on screen. Utterly grim. This and inarticulate vernacular accents are very bad trends.

Just spent a few days off work sick and went looking for something to get my teeth into and rediscovered Deadwood.

Man, I forgot just how fucking good this series is. Every episode has two or three amazing monologues that are at least half swear words and half poetry.

Ian McShane's Swearengin's character is an all time great, as is Timothy Olyphant's Seth Bullock.

Loved the asian dude who said nothing but feed all the bodies to the pigs.

Will keep binging on this but with the sound down low as the wife really doesn't like the continuous swearing.

Yep Swearengen was such an awesome character, always have a look at anything with Olyphant in it since too!

Thought it was nice to see a western series where people behaved and spoke like they did, as you wuold expect in all but lawless town.

Just finished watching 'Flint Town' on Netflix, I think someone on here recommended it. Outstanding, thoroughly enjoyed it. 8 part documentary on the Flint's police force from 2016 - 2017. Flints rated as one of the poorest cities in the USA and also with one of the highest crime rates. All set to the backdrop of their drinking water crisis, the rise of th BLM movement and the US presidential election.

A Brit series from 2015 that I missed first time around has appeared on Netflix. "Unforgotten", starts of like a run of the mill murder procedural but becomes an interesting study in different life decisions of people connected with an old murder and how their lives can unravel at the tug of a thread. Quality watch.
Now I need to find S2 (2017), which isn't appearing on any streaming searches.
