Inglorious Basterds is well up there on my list ( 2nd favourite Tarantino movie ever ) but it's possibly a bit silly to be a genuine war flick.
Fury. I thought it was ok, Shia LeBouf doesn't annoy me though.

I make a point of watching it every Anzac Day.
You need to watch Gallipoli for some local flavour.
Private Ryan is an epic movie. Personally, it was good to visit some of the real locations of the movie (e.g. Utah beach and the Normandy cemetery at Omaha where the movie starts and ends).
I like some of the earlier war movies like The Big Red One, Where Eagles Dare and the first anti-war movie from 1930 - All Quiet On The Western Front. The TV remake with John-Boy isn't as good.

He is nothing but an absolute talentless cock to me. You also don't like Leigh Hart though so I'm always cautious of your opinion Neps

Where Eagles Dare. Classic Clint. Good flick overall but quite a bit of 60s cheesiness. Another couple of that ilk are Von Ryan's Express and the Battle of Britain.

Agree, that’s the only movie I’ve thought he was good in . It’s almost a toned down version of what Audie Murphy did.

I went to Normandy on a ww2 tour and saw where the big red 1 stormed the beach. They sent weaker troops in to draw fire while the 1 outflanked the defences and destroyed them

I was only young but I absolutely loved Guns of the Navarone
I used to watch that with the old man at least once a year on video.
The Big Red One is great. The director and star (Sam Fuller and Lee Marvin) actually fought in the war (Fuller actually in the 1st Division, Marvin in the Pacific I think) so it was pretty realistic, although Speilberg certainly showed you don't need to have been there to make a realistic seeming war film.

It wasn't at the awesome level but I did enjoy Enemy at the Gate. The whole cat and mouse sniper thing and the Russian angle was a bit different
Me too. I've been meaning to watch that again. The 2013 release of Stalingrad was an interesting movie from a Russian perspective.
