I was only young but I absolutely loved Guns of the Navarone

I used to watch that with the old man at least once a year on video.

The Big Red One is great. The director and star (Sam Fuller and Lee Marvin) actually fought in the war (Fuller actually in the 1st Division, Marvin in the Pacific I think) so it was pretty realistic, although Speilberg certainly showed you don't need to have been there to make a realistic seeming war film.

It wasn't at the awesome level but I did enjoy Enemy at the Gate. The whole cat and mouse sniper thing and the Russian angle was a bit different

Me too. I've been meaning to watch that again. The 2013 release of Stalingrad was an interesting movie from a Russian perspective.

Speaking of Lee Marvin, the dirty dozen was great. Like inglorious bastards before inglorious bastards

I've watched Escape From Sobibor a few times now. Add Triumph of the Spirit to that list.

Will look that up, Escape from Sobibor has some scenes that are very hard to watch . Fantastic film

Schindler's list. I could only watch it once, it was too intense. Black and white was a brilliant move, captured the brutality of the holocaust

The Inglorious Basterds part of Inglorious Basterds. I remember when it was first advertised as being made it was assumed it was a Dirty Dozen style movie - but I'm glad it was what it was.

Platoon is by far my favourite Vietnam film. A Midnight Clear was another decent WW2 movie. Did anyone watch that Mormon WW2 movie? Saints and Soldiers I think it was called.

I also remember a film on video called The Lost Command about the French at Dien Ben Phu. If I watched that now I don't think I'd be supporting the French characters.

The Great Raid is a decent war film , in real life there was a guy in the toilet who was deaf and missed the whole thing. Came out to find the camp empty, fortunately they sent people back for him .

Midnight Clear is pretty good, I didn’t know about Saints and Soldiers being a Mormon film but it was a decent film considering it’s budget. Did the church put up some money for it?

Loved Platoon but was never a big fan of Apocalypse Now. I watched the Redux version a few years back and my opinion didn't change.

Anyone remember the TV series Tour Of Duty? That was a very good show set in the Vietnam War.

Loved that show . Not sure if it’s held up.
Glad I’m not the only one who thinks Apocalypse now is a bit meh, watched it again recently and it was disappointing. I didn’t know the young black kid was Lawrence Fishburne till recently.

Every bit as good as Private Ryan. Spielberg is nothing short of a genius, however do ya class it as a war film as such?

It's another I watch once a year. Neeson is so good which makes his bullshit action movies these days kinda hard to fathom.

Yes. I've still got Tour of Duty 1 and 2 soundtracks on cassette. 🙂

Tour of Duty (TV Series 1987–1990) ⭐ 8.3 | Action, Drama, War

Apocolypse NOw was decent enough, but I watched the extended version at 196 mins which is a fucking long film, even by todays marathon standards, and at that length, it has to be pretty special to hold you for it all (I watched it over a couple of nights IIRC)

The opening scene with the choppers is cool in surround sound.
