It was pretty good, more for people our age I think. An interesting peek into what a future might be like when the virtual world is more interesting than reality.
Had to laugh at the bit where Mendelsohn's character was proposing they could "cover 80% of the screen before causing a seizure!"
It was good having the boy there - he covered the cultural references from the last 4-5 years, and I had the rest
So much to watch on screen tho.

I finally got around to watching ”I Called Him Morgan”— a biography-documentary from last year about the genius horn player Lee Morgan, largely told by the woman who shot and killed him. Well worth watching if you’re a fan or have never heard of him. 8/10 (Unlikely there will be a better music soundtrack all year. 10/10)

The Outsider
Netflix movie about an American soldier who ends up in a Japanese prison full of yakuza at the end of the war. He helps one of them get out, so they take him under his wing, freeing him from jail and then giving him a job as a yak enforcer.
It could be more accurately named "Gaunt Jared Leto stares dead-eyed at everyone for two hours and kills some mofos".
A bit slow-paced but it actually has a Japanese gang film pacing to it I reckon. A little disjointed here and there.
I liked it. There were tits.
4 koi tattoos out of 5 slashed throats

The Quiet Place. By buggering fuck this was a frightening movie. Jesus, I'm used to slash- fests, contrived frights and all round creepiness but this was just an hour and a half of sustained, oppressive terror that messed with my head. Tremendous.
Good, I love movies like that. Will look for it.

I watched this and thought to myself it could be a really good movie if someone other than Leto was in it. Someone who could act...

Ho. Ho. Ho.

Dead set I would hate that movie and I can only thank the lucky stars that Mrs Hooroo also isn't into horrors.
I am gutted that I don't like those types of movies as this one sounds awesome!

Didn't realise until I was listening to a podcast last night but this month is the 50th anniversary of the release of 2001.
Don't agree that it is a masterpiece but it is undoubtedly a landmark movie.
Even at the time the monkey suits looked shit but some of the other special effects were quite good especially given usually filmed as one take and relied on stunts rather than CGI

Interesting
What do you think is a masterpiece in film - and what puts it there? To me, I think it was a masterpiece, it's stood the test of time and is still watchable today. To be 50 years old and still quality is bloody impressive.
My top of head short masterpiece list
2001
Shawshank
A New Hope
Pulp Fictionvery soft spots for Princess Bride (and Cinema Paradiso)

@nzzp Im 50 + and still quality ...
I think 2001 was an important film but I don't even think its Kubricks best so it fails the masterpiece test there. However I haven't watched it since it came out so will re-visit it.
My all time fave movie is Kagemusha so I am probably not best equipped to define popular masterpieces. Of your list I like Shawshank (& PB) Rest are a bit meh.

The thing for me was that it was both ground breaking at the time, and also science-accurate (which is rare!). There is a lot of info online about the significance of it
also, it's now 25 years since Groundhog Day came out. THat's a dead set classic.

@rembrandt if you’ve got young kids you may find it upsetting. Just saying.
Ha cheers for the heads up though most things that upset me the most these days you will find in our politics forum.
Watching tomorrow night with a few friends who get very animated even in not-so-good horrors so this could be very interesting viewing indeed.

The Godfather 1 & 2 are still absolute classics and still stand up now. The original is 46yo.
Yep, although I'm way more a 1 than 2 fan.
I've never been a huge fan of Kubrick films, don't dislike them but he's not a director I fluff. I find 2001 to be a bit boring. His best film, by a distance is Dr Strangelove, although I haven't seen Barry Lyndon.

The Titan
Flick about a bunch of scientists trying to create superbeings to repopulate a planet cos earth is dying. Starring the bloke from clash of the titans, the blonde chick from Orange is the New black and the hot black chick who hooks up with the leader of the dickless dudes in GOT.
Genuinely starts brilliantly and is very thought provoking before descending into one of the biggest shitfests I've seen in years. Seriously, it seemed like two different movies spliced together.
2 TV non speaking genetic creatures out of 5 inept soldiers

The 70’s are an absolute fucken golden age of cinema, can extend it into the first year or 2 of the 80’s
Think of movies that changed the cinema landscape for ever, most came in that period
