Just watching Cheetahs v Munster. I know most halfbacks do it, but I don't recall any doing it quite to the degree Murray does.. Why is he allowed to roll the ball half a metre out of the breakdown and still have it protected? Ref's calling "use it" as though the ball is available from the breakdown, when in reality it's a long way out and should be free for all.

I think we discussed this when the Lions were here.

The death of rucking...and therefore a lack of this..

Late to party but I wish 15s was ref'd like the 7s, with all the ball chucking and pretending that you thought the penalty went your way etc. 7s refs smash down on that, the game is faster and that is better to watch, more respectful and also good for Kiwi teams 😄

@bones was a number of occasions in the Blues game, when the ball was clearly out, even by todays standards, Ruru had hands on, roll it back a foot then kick/pass...that area is a joke at present.

@taniwharugby see I didn't notice it that much, it was just watching Murray do it last night I thought he was going to get smoked the first time I saw him do it as it was so far out of the breakdown, like a metre. Then the ref says it's still in. It was like Murray was making a parody of it at first. Nothing in the blues game came close that I saw.

At some point a captain should just say no
No no no, stop the game, this is horseshit.

And then point out to the ref that the ruck is on the halfway, and hence there is no way the ball on the 10m can not be out.

I know that we are basically the pioneers of pushing the boundaries, but the game is entering joke status.

Murray completely takes the piss with that. Frustrating to watch.

Plays the game to the letter of the law. If that's hwo it'll be refereed, play that way - that will drive change more than whinging

One thing i've noticed a lot this year is defending teams intentionally knocking an attacking pass backwards/down as they face their own goal-line chasing in defense.

It's legal - as the goes backwards not down/forwards but to me seems a bit of a cheap cop out. There is no intention to catch the ball whatsoever - its a very negative play.

It's clever. If a team makes a stupid pass too close to defenders why should they be rewarded?

Yep, like calling for the ball when you're running a defensive line behind someome. Seems to work well, and it's just smart play

In my opinion as a viewer a pass in this instance is a positive attacking piece of play - when this is occuring typically the defender is facing their own goal line which means the attacking team is making/made a break and has momentum - knocking it down with no intention of catching it is a negative play and just takes away the momentum in a cheap way.

I just find it negative just like how an intentional knock forward is penalised instead of a straight knock on or like how intentionally knock the ball out of play is penalised (e.g. SBW v France last year).

However to be clear I'm not talking about changing the rule cos I understand it could then open up a can of worms (e.g. knocking the ball back from a lineout etc). It just annoys me is all.

Murray completely takes the piss with that. Frustrating to watch.

Look, I don't like it and I would like something to be done. I just think that if you can make it look ridiculous week after week, something will be done.

As for the 'letter of the law', I'd challenge anyone to actually play the game the way the law book sets it out. So much of rugby is accepted referees interpretation. I have issues with it, but it's just the way life will go.
