    They will join Joe Bloggs to bring to 4 the number of Kiwis togging out for the French club.

    Why do you bother if you aren't interested in rugby?

    @billy-tell
    It makes seven NZ Origin players at the club now, not 4.

    Probably more interested than you bones. Even still actively play the game.

    @billy-tell wow that's amazing! I wouldn't have the first clue about rugby and definitely don't play it at all. Guess it should be me coming on making shitty, snide, jealous sounding remarks on this thread huh.

    @billy-tell what an odd comment...

    You are on a Rugby forum, where you probably don't even know people outside of the internet and make assumptions about their rugby interests/participation?

    You aren't in NZ right, so it'd be fair of me to assume you know jack shit about grass roots rugby in NZ?

    probably as good a place as any...

    Brad Shields cleared by the RU to be selected to play for them in June, and return to NZ to finish super rugby...

    @rapido don't think they went back and played super rugby though did they...

    @antipodean apparently their injuries was the reason Steddie got permission to select him if required.

    I mean they were selected while playing overseas, as they had contracts for the following season with Prem teams.

    Francis came back last year to SR. don't know if he played any games, don't follow Blues. But he played for England in the June window. Before SR was over.

    @rapido ah ok, yeah they mentioned (on the radio) that a precedent had been set with Francis.

    @rapido @taniwharugby From memory I think Francis got injured whilst playing in that June series for England and so didn't play for the Blues after the June window - but he was still part of the Blues squad and would have/could have played if fit.

    @tim If it got to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Tribunal arbitral du sport), I'd expect the NZR to lose.

    I'd let him go, I don't see the point in keeping him.

    What would be interesting is having World Rugby responsible for insuring players on international duty, as FIFA now does.

    Yea cant see any benefit trying to hold him to his contract refusing to allow him to play for England, would come across as petty...only thing would be if he injured himself there would need to be compensation

    But there is no compensation, if you are injured on international duty, your club doesn't get compensation. It is a stupid thing to get into a battle over, I reckon NZRU would be stuffed.

    @machpants but I think the fact he is registered as a NZer not an English player is what clouds things, meaning NZR aren't obligated to release him.

    I meant if NZR agree to release him for the test then put a caveat for some compensation if injured.

    A bit of a compromise that will likely be meaningless in the greater scheme...

    As far as I know that's not true, all unions are required to release eligible players for international duties during the windows. It doesn't matter that he's playing in France, NZ or Outer Mongolia - you have to be released. Shields is eligible for both the UK and NZ under World Rugby rules, so if wither of those calls him up - and he wants to go- his club has to release him. Canes and NZRU have to. That's World Rugby rules which trump any clause he's signed in his contract. Compensation is not required by WR rules and the NZRU would be in breach of WR regs if they tried to stop him, same as if they played Owen Farrell in an international.
