Has anyone watched Citizen Kane recently? It's been on my 'really should watch' list for a very long time. Not sure if B&W would hold my attention enough.
I watch it about every other year. It is brilliant, especially the b&w photography (by Gregg Toland) some of the best ever. Most modern audiences likely won’t understand how groundbreaking it was, but there are still techniques that blow me away. One scene in particular that was (and still is) sheer genius at the time, is the scene of Kane’s mother inside the cabin signing away his life to a banker, while you see young Charlie through the window playing outside with his (ahem, foreshadowing here) sled. Welles wanted the scene played in tight deep focus from front of frame to the back, which was impossible for even Toland’s new fangled cameras and lenses to pull off. So their solution was a special effect done completely in camera — shoot the interior fully lit and the background though the window dark; then roll the film back and re-focus the lens and re-shoot it with the interior dark and the outside floodlit. Simple genius.
(That scene, btw, was lampooned brilliantly in an early-year Simpsons episode, with toddler Montgomery Burns playing the role of Charles Foster Kane. “Let’s roll!”)

Avengers: Infinity War
Wow. Fuck. Wow.
6 Infinity Stones out of 6.
I liked it, thought they managed the gigantic cast pretty well and kept up the humour of the two most recent Marvel movies (Thor and Black Panther).

All the Money in the world - JP Getty a miserably wealthy man who refuses to pay the ransom for his grandson who is kidnapped in Italy, for 2 reasons, 1 if he did, then the rest of his grandkids would be targets, and 2, ransoms were not tax deductable.
Think this was the movie Kevin Spacey was in until his sexual assault allegations came to light and also the pay equity thing that saw Wahlberg donate part of his salary to MIchelle Williams.
Obviously based on a true story, so not sure how accurate it is, a wee bit slow, portrays Getty Snr as an absolute cnut, which I think was true.
Anywhoo, 3 miserable old rich cnuts out of 5 million dollar pieces of art

I'd rate it about the same. In terms of historical accuracy there's heaps of liberties taken. ( the old boy died quite a few years after his grandson was freed for example )
Google JP Gerry though, sounds like an absolute fluffybunny in real life.

Den of Thieves
Bunch of Crooks plan a massive heist, bunch of cops try and stop them....
Very similar premise to Heat and while no where near as good ( Heat is an all time fucken classic ) it's still a really decent satisfying action thriller. Gerard Butler good as the main cop but the real surprise is the bloke from Orange is the New Black as the main criminal mastermind. He was fucken awesome. Good performances all round and a nice twist right at the end. Pretty certain every main cast member was told to get inked and smash some tin though. Basically impossible to tell the good guys from the bad guys.
4 tough, jacked inked crooks out of 5 tough, jacked inked cops

@mn5 I've heard ok things about this movie (apparently Cube Jr is really good in it) but I just can't watch Butler anymore.
I hear that, Butler has been in danger of Neeson/Travolta levels of unwatchable shit with some of his latest efforts but he's really good in this.

The Shape of Water
A classic case of not letting the Mrs pick a movie. Mute mousy looking janitor woman makes friends with a scaly slimy monster thing in 1960s America. The era is captured really well and the SFX are great, I also liked Michael Shannon as the head agent, unfortunately the rest was just cringeworthy unwatchable crap. ( she admitted it too ) I can't believe we sat through it. SPOILER: ( she ends up fucking the creature )
1.5 out of 5

How new is your relationship? I ask as at one time I would succumb to such errors die to the novel element of being in a relationship but that evaporated quite quickly.

Not new at all but I'm a fair person. I chose Den of Thieves and we both admit my judgement is far superior at the moment

I think I see your plan. Sit through one complete pile of
bankwank at the behest of your Missus and then harvest the guilt and turn it into four or five violent films.Good skills man, good skills.

@mn5 I like Neeson, haven't watched Travolta in years due to his movie choices not him, I'd watch either over Butler any day.
Also, since I'm clearly on a disagreeing mode with you at the moment
I thought Shannon was meh in The Shape of Water - I'm over him playing that type of character.

But hang on, you watch Neeson?
The Commuter is Taken without his daughter being kidnapped. Utter crapola. Naturally he has 'skills'....yawn
Which I find a real shame cos he has been awesome in the past.

I haven't seen Commuter. But I'm not sure what the problem is, you're basically explaining it to me as Taken with all the good stuff (skills) and without the annoying stuff (annoying adult daughter who acts like a 5 year old).
