    So looks like Hastings Boys two years of glory are over, normal service resumed ... oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

    I'll put their loss down to jet lag.

    Have TA always been in the CNI comp? Think they have had about 2-3 competitive years since 2000 CHB would have surely been a more consistent performer outside of the SJC and LFC teams in HB

    @magpie_in_aus I think they were added two or three years ago, but I'm not sure about that.

    Te Awamutu were playing in the Counties-Manakau-Waikato comp the last couple of years. They've got a lot better recently in all their rugby (I suspect the whole school as a whole has).

    I think that CMW comp has folded though, and some of the Waikato teams are now CNI (which used to be mostly private and ex-private schools) and some like Wesley dropped out(?).

    Cambridge have dropped quite a long way recently. Can't say I mind, as I do not have good memories of playing Cambridge teams. It's their parents that I hate, the school itself is OK.

    @stargazer

    Well that's confusing. Thank-you for the clarification.

    Did Wesley change their minds, or was my information about them talking of leaving CNI wrong?

    The Waikato/Counties combined comp is not happening this year.

    Waikato 1st XV will be:
    Cambridge High School
    Morrinsville College
    Matamata College
    Hillcrest High School
    Te Awamutu College
    Tokoroa High School
    HBHS 1
    HBHS 2

    Grading games happening on Wednesday, St Johns and St Pauls might be there too

    Counties 1st XV will be:
    Alfriston College
    Manurewa HS
    Papakura HS
    Pukekohe HS
    Rosehill College
    Waiuku College

    Wesley and St Peters in CNI not sure what comp St Pauls is in.
    HBHS in top 8

    Hamilton BHS pulled out of the Chiefs Cup because they are usually just playing the same teams they will meet in the Super 8, and Chiefs Top 4 playoffs. Last year Ham BHS played Rotorua BHS 3 times (Chiefs Cup round robin and final, Super 8).

    So they are playing other Hamilton schools but these games aren't always competitive. I went to watch Hamilton BHS play St Johns on Sat. Hamilton won 79-0. This Sat's game against St Peters Cambridge will be closer.

    There is now a University of Waikato Chiefs Secondary Schools Competition featuring other teams from the region. That has replaced the old Chiefs Cup.

    @bovidae I see they've split a Chiefs Trophy competition from a Chiefs Cup competition (bottom of the page). Is that because the 6 schools in the Trophy competition would be hammered by Wesley, Rotorua BHS, FDMC and Tauranga if they were in the same comp?

    @stargazer

    There was a Chiefs Cup, Trophy and Bowl last year. The 4 teams in the Cup are definitely the strongest of the remaining teams.

    Click on the different competition links.

    St John's has a very green team this year after a run of good players. They were within minutes of beating HBHS only a couple of years' back. That's a big drop for them.

    @chester-draws

    This game was played at St Johns in wet and muddy conditions so that was a decent scoreline from an almost completely new HBHS team (only 5-6 left from last year). When these teams played there a few years back St Johns had a weapon on the wing (Siave Seti) and he scored a couple of tries.

    As to the game you mentioned (Chiefs Top 4 qualifier), that was a game St Johns should have won but chose to kick to the corner instead of attempting a penalty to draw the game and win on countback. St Johns did bring their own ref that day though. 😉

    @Bovidae

    Pretty sure St John's would have lost on count-back (if memory serves it was based on position in any competition they both played in, not the normal first try, so Chiefs Cup). In any case the aim was to beat HBHS, not qualify for Top 4.

    No Waikato team has beaten HBHS for a very long time. The psychological benefits of that would be immense. Qualifying for Top 4 only to get smashed next round, less so.

    Siave was indeed a beast, but the best guy in that team was Josh Kaho, who is currently making NZ age grade teams.
