I'm sure @Higgins as an Axeman (as well as a Texan) will approve of this 🙂

Tamatea have been deducted five points for playing Hika Elliot in their loss to Napier OB Marist last week.

Tamatea did not have an international clearance from Hika's French club, he wasn't a registered Tamatea player, and the club was told prior to the game by HBRU they couldn't play him.

        So Tamatea played him anyway.

It's been a long time since Tamatea have been a threat in the Maddison Trophy. Last time they made the top four playoffs was 2005, but off-field decisions like this are just dumb.

Watched Havelock North v Tech OB. Havelock won 10-8, each side scoring just one try.

JJ Taulagi received a yellow card in the first half. He has a quick temper and bit of pushing and shoving with a Havelock player after the ball had gone saw him get the card. Is easily riled.

Magpies prop Mark Braidwood looked like he went off injured.

Tech had three chances to win in the last five minutes. Got a penalty which Taulagi kicked for touch in the corner, and it went into in-goal for a Havelock drop out.

Got a second penalty and kicked for touch close to the corner. Won the ball in the lineout but got held up on the line - ruled a maul and turnover.

From the scrum Havelock kicked it out, but still in their own 22. This time Havelock stole the ball on the Tech throw in.

I'll never forget how Taulagi got that red card in the Chiefs v Sunwolves game last year. Dirty. It worries me a bit for the Magpies.

It happened in the 82th minute:

Hastings RS have ended Napier OB Marist's unbeaten run with a 40-27 win. Hastings scored six tries (five converted) to five tries (one converted). Hastings got their sixth try right on fulltime.

A good game to watch, will be surprised if they don't meet up again in the final. I haven't seem any other team play at their level this year except maybe Tech OB.

The more I watch Folau Fakatava the more I reckon he is good enough to play Mitre 10 Cup this year behind Brad Weber. I thought he had a better game for Hastings RS than Ellery Wilson did for NOB Marist - was just more consistent. Has a good pass off his left hand, his weaker hand.

Don't quite agree with current approach of kicking all penalties to touch, particularly as this was a close match all the way through - neither side had a penalty attempt at goal, even though they were awarded penalties in the opposition 22.

@number-10 I guess we can tell why Napier OB didn't kick any penalties by their conversion rate.

Good to see Napier OB might have a challenger though.

@number-10 Hastings had a few extra reasons to try harder for that win. It was Ioane Ioane's 100th game and Mason Emerson's 50th for HRS.

@number-10 I'm not surprised after following his instagram posts for a while. He seems to be a bit of an attention seeker. All those new Auckland boys are also very much a clique that doesn't mix much with other guys. I can understand that players - in the beginning - seek the company of guys they know, but I wonder how much they hang out with others.
If they get selected for the Magpies, I hope this doesn't have a negative impact on the team. There shouldn't be room for big egos and separate groups in a team.

I will be up home this weekend and still working out my excuses to absentee myself for a few hours on Saturday afternoon to show up at Whitmore Park and to boost bar turnover afterward. Last time I fronted the Texans strolled in 87 - 00 but the wheels have fallen off big time since then. Will have to try harder now that it looks like I will have to bring my boots just in case!
Look out Pirates Higgins might be a late call up for the Texans!

Game of the round is probably Havelock North (4th) v Clive (5th).

Just read in the Hawke's Bay Today that Jonah Lowe will be playing for Clive.

Watched Havelock North v Clive, Clive won 24-11, scoring four tries for the bonus point.

Jonah Lowe played the whole 80 at centre and scored a try for Clive in the first half.

JJ Taulagi made a couple of nice runs from fullback but received a yellow card in the first half, which someone said was his 4th of the season. Havelock took a quick tap in the Clive 22 and Taulagi did not retire 10 metres when he tackled the halfback who had made the quick tap.

Both teams received two yellow cards and the Havelock scrum was awful in the second half.

@number-10 said in HB Club Rugby 2018:

Interesting that Taulagi does not appear to have received any sanction for the HBRFU Judicial Sub-committee after receiving three yellow cards. Maybe they work under different yellow card awardings to most of the remainder of the country where the mandatory penalty is a minimum 1 week suspension after collecting three in a season.

I did hear some interesting comments re the Taulagi situation which are interesting to say the least. Not my place to comment on them given that I did not get the chance to confirm whether said comments were 100% true or not, particularly a disturbing one which occurred on the day of the match against Havelock North.

Damn disappointing that Colenso Pirates ran in two tries very late in the piece to scrape home by seven in a game that ebbed and flowed throughout. Pirates did have a couple of interesting players but fairly much relied on a couple who played very well to get them home. Their No 7 was very impressive, dominating their lineout winning about 90% of their total throws whilst Pouri Rakete-Stones (spelling? the under 20s prop anyway) made some powerful bursts when in possession, showing good leg drive. He looked to play a crucial part in two late scrums that won them the ball from Tech put ins. Their halfback (looked Japanese) also went well with some fast passes to his large 1st five.
Tech looked the goods for most of the second half bar the last five minutes when it all came unstuck. They told me TBW was playing and by a process of elimination decided that he must have been the guy in the No 7 jersey. If it was then he still has a bit of work to get back to the size I can remember him being in his all too sporadic appearances under the previous HB Magpies Coach.
