listening to the radio this morning Gardner has a process to go through, which he followed something like this:

Was there an even contest: No
Did he land on feet (penalty only) : No
Did he land on back (YC only) : No
Did he land on head: Yes - RC.

Gardner was handled it pretty well, I said to TR Jnr at the time, he would get a RC despite being accidental, we see loads of accidental collisions with intention of going for the ball result in cards.

What they should have done was say the RC was sufficient punishment for the incident, lets all move on.

Get fucked. World Rugby have shown themselves to be pathetic imbeciles incapable of consistency. This now sets a precedent that as long as you only ever look at the ball and would be in a position to catch it when it fell from the sky, you can blindly run into anyone and fuck the consequences.

yea, pretty much this. Just when i thought i was starting to work out the interpretation of this (whether i agree or not) this gets released, and now i have zero idea what is acceptable and what is not.

Turns out it helped him... 😉 I'm not sure what to make of them "cancelling" it on a Monday though...

Video footage showed Fall at all times "had his eyes on the ball whilst it was in the air, which showed, in our opinion, a clear intention, on the part of the player, that he intended to contest it," the committee found.

The judicial committee appear to have taken the view that because he bumped into ALB, he was compromised:

From the moment the ball was kicked by France, Fall ran at pace to a position which he felt would put him in the best possible position to catch it, the committee said.

His line was altered by a collision with All Blacks centre Anton Lienert-Brown, which caused him to lose his balance, stumble and be "propelled or pushed" into the path Barrett was taking, the statement said.

Fall's attempt to contest the ball was "compromised" by running into Lienert-Brown and Barrett being flipped in mid-air was "in our opinion" a direct cause of that collision.

Fall had been denied the time and space to put himself in a position to avoid a collision with Barrett or to contest the ball as he had initially planned., the committee found.

The only problem with that is he took an extra few steps. At least three I counted.

It's a terrible decision. It's not as if Fall was pushed into Beaudy.

What the hey! Gardner is going to get burned by this yet this seems like a change in stance from WR. I will await Gopser and Pichot's tweets after conferring with The Walrus and Gallagher before being fully outraged.

Edit: Seemingly I'm swimming against the tide of the Fern at the moment in thinking the right decision has been made here.

Yes. It was inarguably as clear a red card as I have seen under current applications.

I argued the opposite with the red card in the first test. I've not seen red cards for people ducking into tackles. Not saying it doesn't happen in other hemispheres or other comps. But in the rugby I limit myself to watching that isn't how I've seen tit refereed. But in the rugby I watch (I tune in halfway through SR and stay in the game until November, majority involving NZ teams) I have seen multiple red cards the last few years for kick contests gone wrong.

                so, confused

@antipodean i said that at the time too! i am killing this!

Seriously, the judiciary are allowing far too many variables and mitigating factors come in to this. They are making the refs job impossible. Gardner will definitely be 2nd guessing the next one he is confronted with.

I know it isn't much consolation, but Ayoub agreed with his decision and thought process, so that is 2 of them that got it wrong.

More than happy for them to approach this differently. But for years now it has been strict liability - I.E. intent doesn't matter - as they considered the situation to be inherently dangerous.

To suddenly change that now without any warning or notice is farcical. Angus Gardner should be fucking pissed with that decision and should be asking for a "please explain".

And this time last year IIRC when WR were clamping down on contests in the air, I bemoaned the fact people were being sent off for simply not jumping as high as another competitor. The pendulum has now swung so far back the other way, I'm surprised Beaudy hasn't been called to account for dangerous play.

good point. Where is BB's duty of care? He's run a long way to get to that point, he could have caved in the Frenchie's face.

He was crap at the start but by the end a very good player. He's been in excellent form this year too. It's quite a Blues-franchise based forum this one, and the bias flows through. Luatua MAY have gone on to be the answer, but he had a nothing AB career if that is the evidence base people are basing their lamenting on.

Luatua is SO over-rated on this forum. All this misty-eyed nostalgia. Just another player who looked good at Super Rugby level and couldn't make the step up. I'd have Vito back though for sure.

pffft hahaha really? Vito? Who has misty eyed nostalgia now? An entirely forgettable All Black.

Blues-based? haha. Take the piss out of some over-rated 'canes players and see where all the loud voices are based.

No such thing as an over rated canes player! :face_with_stuck-out_tongue_winking_eye:

The issue with Luatua's treatment is the coaching group went with Elliot Dixon instead in 2016 (as really a reward for 2015 form) and it backfired completely.

It's a two fold fail - Dixon showed nothing and can't even start at Super level now let alone be a test player meanwhile Luatua has left.

Looking at that incident again, I can't see how anyone can say it wasnt a red. Yes it might have killed the game as a contest, but tough shit. I'll happily see more of that if it provides a adequate deterrent.

That ALB played a major role is complete horseshit.
