Did remind me though. Is Franks that bad at taking the ball up that they have just given up on working with him? He's dropping to the floor at the slightest hint of a tackle and never attempts any kind of leg drive. Surely the coaches can improve that easily?

I remember chatting with old fern mate Red Beard about this. It is a mystery why someone so strong in the gym ( particularly at Olympic style lifting ) has all the impact of a fly hitting a windshield when taking the ball up. If it hasn't improved by now I doubt it ever will.

Hansen sees Squire as his number one six. He confirmed as such in the press conference when asked if Scott Barrett could play 6 and he said no and said Squire is his first choice.

Much better performance tonight. Especially with all the new guys in the team.
Scott Barrett my MOTM. Don't see why people are saying he is too slow to cover 6. Not like Kaino was fast. Would much rather a strong tackler/strong carrier and lineout option with good ball skills over a flaah open field runner like Fifita.

Dmac was also good. Still had some poor moments but for the most part he was playing like a 10.
Hopefully he and Richie can both develop so we have some good depth at 10.

SBW was looking really good. Unfortunate that he got hurt. Think our backline balance with a strong runner at 12 to bend the line.

Thought Goodhue was decent on debut. Especially second half. Hemopo good on debut and i thought Frizzell wasn't as bad as has been said on here but still not seeing what he has over Akira.

Hopefully this is the last time we see Todd miss a squad. Time to have him on the bench in the top team.

Rieko was bloody good again. So much gas. Looked good at centre too.

Think people are jumping the gun on calling Ben Smith past it. He is still a fucking good rugby player.
And while Naholo wasn't great on D tonight he is still a bloody good winger to have in the squad.

One and only thing i will say about the ref/tmo: The Frizzell no try was bullshit. Sure if the ref goes upstairs and says can you see a grounding? And the tmo can't see it you don't give the try. But when the ref said he saw it you don't interrupt then overturn the call because you aren't sure if he got it or not. There was no clear held up just like there was no grounding. So go with the refs call ffs.

Also the NZ anthem was awful. I hate the slow warbling opera types.

Haha, dammit. That happens when your finger tip is the width of 3 keys on a phone. I've probably done it so many times my phone has given up trying to correct me.
I think bulkshit is a pretty good word actually.

@victor-meldrew DMac is a very mixed bag. Two intercepts, some mixed kicking options, poor kick off, plus some great running. Still doesn’t look to setup players outside him but very good at beating defenders.

              Tough audience

@booboo tough but fair. He is such a talent. He came good in the last 30 or so minutes when game opened up. Not bad before that, but would like to see him make earlier and better running and passing decisions, and run a game in the first half when things are tight. Hate the way we writeoff players who make a mistake and then laud them when they score a try.

would it be a good idea to have the same ref do each test rather than change each week?

I was really happy with DMac. That’s what you want to see when the heat is on him in that position. Made similar mistakes that B.B. makes and when hot he was unstoppable.

                  Stoked for him.

But Scott Barrett. Wow. If we can keep him, Whitelock and Retallick fit for World Cup we will be unstoppable if SB keeps that sort of form.

@duluth Steve raises two excellent points, albeit things he's said previously:

                        • Foul play is clear and obvious. Punish that rather than outcome you can't control in a dynamic game.
                        • World Rugby need to do their job and clarify the roles and responsibilities of the adjudication team. The idea that the ref is sole judge of fact was clearly over ridden by an over zealous incompetent in George Ayoub.

So, my thoughts breaking it down to those stills.

Serin is pushing against the ref before Smith has even removed it from the scrum.

Serin is not as far offside as I originally thought.

Lacey is physically stopping him getting further offside ....

Lacey is stopping him leaving the mother of all gaps for Aaron Smith. Serin has no good options here.

Technically perfect execution by NZ. Wheeling their scrum to remove loosies from the equation, isolating Serin on the 'short' side in a 2 on 1 at pace.

Beautiful try spoilt by the optics of the ref getting in the way.

@rapido how far away from the scrum can defending halfback stand? I would have thought that he is 3 metres away and therefore offside rule is like other backs (non halfback).

The problem is the law only states the halfback has to be "close" to the scrum. I'd institute an interpretation that "close" now means within arms reach.

It would fundamentally change how teams defend at scrum time because normally the halfback defends against the five-eighth. So they hare off from the scrum and any head start from their perspective is a good one.

Without any basis in fact or bothering to consult the laws I think it's 2m. After that he has to drop to the 5m.

@rapido how far away from the scrum can defending halfback stand? I would have thought that he is 3 metres away and therefore offside rule is like other backs (non halfback).

                                      Law 19.30
Once play in the scrum begins, the scrum-half of the team not in possession:
                                      a. Takes up a position with both feet behind the ball and close to the scrum or
                                      b. Permanently retires to a point on the offside line either at that team’s hindmost foot, or
                                      c. Permanently retires at least five metres behind the hindmost foot.

It's ok. I have no answers but chatting about it online makes me feel better about it.
