@nepia said in Super Rugby News: @bones said in Super Rugby News: Would be good if they picked up someone like Gear to replace Lowe... Rico must be in his 40's by now but he probably still goes fairly well. He's only got the Chiefs and Canes to go to make the full set of NZ super rugby teams. There are 9 other provinces he can choose from too.

 Date Friday 20 July
Kick-off 19:35 localReferee Glen Jackson Well that explains the TAB odds. It’s a real conundrum, a former Chiefs player reffing the Hurricanes v Chiefs at Welly.

@footy01 said in Super Rugby News: Jordie has never played first 5 in his life, only against the lions for the canes for about 20 minutes And did a better job in that 20 minutes than any of the other “prospects” floating around.

Not to mention an Aussie reffing Tahs/Clan and a Saffer on Lions/Jags. Why open yourself up to criticism like this? I don't demand neutral refs in all circumstances, but surely Jacko could do Lions/Jags, Peyper could do Tahs/Clan and Gardner could do Chiefs/Canes and we'd remove any chance of a 'ref bias' accusation by any team or fanbase...

@barbarian don't bring logic and common sense into the equation

@footy01 said in Super Rugby News: Jordie has never played first 5 in his life, only against the lions for the canes for about 20 minutes hate to be picky, but, well...you say he has never played 1st 5 in his life, then go on to say except that one time.. Think the comment is more that JB is oft touted on here as being able to play anywhere. @barbarian yep, SANZAR do like to leave the door open for criticism, assume all in the name of saving a few $$$

@taniwharugby Jordie's height would be a significant disadvantage playing first five at high levels. Would cost him crucial fractions of seconds in doing everything - especially the mechanics of things like clearing kicks under pressure. I think there's obvious reasons why halfbacks and first fives are usually the smallest guys in the team - because big guys simply aren't deft enough to play there. To answer mimic's original question - I don't think anyone whose say matters would see him as a potential first five.

@Chris-B agree completely. He's a class player so would make a decent fist of it (as he did against the Lions), but he's not a natural fit. Fullback his height is a real advantage, particularly under the high balls, so I really like him there - especially given the depth of talent we have in the centres at the moment.

@no-quarter Me too (without a hashtag). It's handy that guys have a bit of utility value, but it's a dangerous ploy getting too fascinated with shoe-horning guys - who are world class in one position - into other positions where they're not. Could pick a pretty terrible team of good players who played out of position.

@steven-harris Was interesting listening to Scotty Stevenson's podcast today - he said that Mafi was constantly bagging his teammates on the field, really yelling at them.

A shame really as he is a world class player. However, he does need to be punished for this sort of behaviour as much as I would like to see him turn out for Japan at the world cup.

Could pick a pretty terrible team of good players who played out of position.I think a Blues fan should get to pick the number 12 in that team.
