The Novel of The Road is a harrowing read. Pretty much the bleakest and, in parts, most sickening thing I have read for a long while. The movie isn't the half of it.

The Counselor is the first original screenplay by McCarthy - all the other movies are versions of his novels. As such, Ridley Scott seems to have devoted large chunks of screentime to dialogue to show off how clever he's been to get the 'Great American Novelist' to write it. Sadly, it's a bit of a mess as a film with very obvious characterisation and a plot that is convoluted and slow.

If you thought the road was sickening-and I agree with you, Blood Meridian by the same author would be much much worse in my opinion. I doubt hollywood would touch it with a 10 foot bargepole.
-

Have only read a synopsis for both, but quite frankly The Road scares the shit out of me because it represents a possible future, and I have a son about that age. -

This Desolation of Smaug review at The Onion is gold:

Riddick and Drinking Buddies were both pretty average.

M4L, Katie Sackhoff and Olivia Wilde get their girls out briefly side on at 57 and 37 mins respectively....not enough to make the movies any better -

Olivia Wilde already got hers out in "Alpha Dog" they were ok, but nothing great. I would still hit it, hard

-

watched Dredd last night. it was ok, plenty violent, too much slow-motion shit in it though (yes yes i know, i mean aside from the obvious bits). Lena Headey picked the wrong movie to try the oscar-bait "hot chick made to look ugly" role.

Hobbit, one of the most disappointing movies I have seen this year.

Added in unnecessary crap (Elf/dwarf love triangle WTF), minimized The Murkwood journey and also. Beorn's character.

Mind you, Smaug was shit hot!

Pretty much how I found it. I actually enjoyed the 1st movie more. The Elf/Dwarf love thing is fu*ken ridiculous. I also didn't picture Beorn looking like they had in the movie. He's supposed to be a bear of a man, not some lean Scandinavian.

Agree about the dragon. I never expected it to look that good.

I don't believe Jackson and co should've made these movies. Would have been better to get new blood on the project I reckon.
-

Gimli seemed kinda infatuated with Galadriel in the last series, and unless I'm mistaken, Aragorn hooked up with Arwen, so there's a lot of inter-species perversion going on in Middle Earth.
-

Wasn't that actually the plan? Jackson didn't want to compete with his own LOTR legacy, hence the directing initially going to del Toro before constant delays saw him leave?
-

It was totally the plan. And without Jackson & Weta, it likely wouldn't have gotten made. When del Toro departed, the entire project was in limbo, and managers of actors would not commit to the project without a director. Jackson accepted the position to ensure the project didn't collapse.

Btw, have you seen the Smaug design artwork that was going to be del Toro's version?

That's a dragon?!
-

Special Forces; Diane Kruger and Djimon Hounsou

Enjoyed this, it would be classed as a foreign film with it needing subtitles for most of the film unless you are fluent in French

Kruger is a war reporter who gets kidnapped in Pakistan, cue the Special Forces head in to rescue...seemed to be some realistic scenes along with some usual BS ones
-

you had me at "Diane Kruger"

-

I watched Runner Runner last night. It wasn't very good. Has some Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck in it and a story about an online gambling mogul/crook - I actually like both actors and they weren't the problem with it. The story was just shit. The tension just didn't feel real.

M4L - no boobies on display but the actress in it was Gemma Arterton who is fairly attractive.
-

Gemma Arterton is hot, but has the acting ability of a bench top
