ha, I wish!! But I dont know of too many single figure burglars/pot hunters :)

I know plenty in the 15-22 bracket though, in fact when I played a few weeks back there was a guy who has been renowned for being a burglar as far back as I can remember (at his peak he was a 10-12 handicapper, but never seemed to be under 15 handicap) he must be late 60's now, playing off about a 20; 44 points, I dunno how guys like that can show thier faces!

haha, that reminds me of a time we were playing ambrose and a 90m par 3 was our last hole.

One of my mates, not a golfer, but a generally talented sportsman put his tee shot about 6 inches from the hole, I step up, put it in the hole on the fly and it pops out and sits on the lip, he just turned to me and smiled, then called me a prick for not letting him ever beat me :)

Guys, I've heard the term Ambrose a few times on here. It is not a term I am familiar with. Would one of you care to enlighten me? Is it a colonial term?

Basically team handicap where each member tees off, then you select the best shot. Everyone then hits another shot from that point, etc.

Ah. We'd call that a Texas Scramble. Good fun but not something you can make a call about on your own golf. Mind you there is nothing quite like medal play for nailing down how good or bad your golf is. I like matchplay but you are then playing the opponent rather than the course.

Ambrose is awesome...but then most I play in you have free drinks carts racing around keeping everyone hydrated, and somehow the golf gets better...

They used to run a pairs tournament up here over 2 days;

Day 1 on 1/2 courses, you played ambrose in the morning, then best ball in the afternoon

Day 2 on nd course, you played alternate shots in the morning and singles in the afternoon.

Was a great tournie and a bit of fun, sadly the 2 clubs that ran it never really saw eye to eye so have splintered off and trying to run 2 seperate tournies with same format

So Xmas holidays.....gonna play some golf.

Started things off with a casual game with the lads from work down the local. Didn't start well as we had a very early tee off and slow wet greens. Hit my 3 wood awesome tho today, didn't even consider driver off the tee as it was that good. Hit 3 wood, 7 iron in to 11 and was over the back for 2 and then 3 wood, 9 iron in to 15. Wedges and putting let me down though.

Down in chch now so will hopefully get rounds in at rangiora, kaiapoi and waimak gorge over the next week.

Played at kaiapoi today. Nice little country course. Pretty short and quite open but some really nice little holes. Didn't play that well at all but still managed an 82.

Pretty windy though and bugger all big trees means your exposed to it a lot more.

One thing I didn't like though was the bunkers which were more stone and dirt than sand. Guess you get that when the whole area is a riverbed.

Am hoping waimak and rangiora bunkers aren't the same but Im expecting similar.

Played Waimakiriri Gorge yesterday in their annual sumner tournament. Unfortunately it was hardly summer conditions with rain for the first hour or so and then the wind turned up which blew the rain away for an hour or so and then more returned for the last 4 or 5 holes. Course held up pretty well tho but very wet in places. Greens surprisingly good. Course is a typical country course but has a couple of very scenic drop shot type par 3s.

I played with a couple of locals plus a guy from Avondale club down here. They did a good job of steering me around the course and pointing out where to go and not to go. I played OK but scorecard suffered from afew lapses in concentration and a few issues with club selection. Hit some great shots directly on the line of the pin but were either a full club short or long of the green. Very frustrating.

[/url]

Only had 34 stableford so no chance of a prize but picked up a doz balls for a closest to the pin for 3 on one of the par 5s.

Overall not a bad course at all. Much better than kaiapoi. I will definitely play it again and also keen to play that tournament again one day. Very friendly people and well run with lots of decent prizes.

Played 9 at Half Moon Bay on a glorious tropical Saturday afternoon. Played possibly my best golf ever. Pared 3 of the first 4 holes, and ended up with a 45.

Only adequate off the tee, but my short chipping was right on, and left me short putts to make. I think I only 3-putted once.

I think 2 rubbish shots cost me a couple of shots otherwise it was all good.

Highlight was probably a 7-iron from about 140 on to a green completely surrounded by mangroves, 1m from the pin. Beautiful

Rangiora Drains well. Play Pegasus. I think it is over rated but it is still a very good course. I'll play there again.
