Whatever happened to the quaint idea of trying to make the best first impression?

In this day and age why does the presence of a tattoo provide a bad impression?

Depends on the tattoo and location i guess. A dick on your forehead probably isn't the best one for a customer facing role. Unless you're an Australian bank...

I agree, but to offer a weak counter argument, maybe it's because they're still a huge deal in other countries (e.g., Japan), so if the role involves working with tourists, perhaps that's a reason. Or, perhaps if you allow tattoos then you can't fight shitheads with some mad ass stuff plastered all over them?

    btw, I'm tastefully tattooed.

@jegga Mind you - they're both tame compared to the clown photo at the bottom of the article on the woman who died from having the snowflake in her hand.

Number one on that guy's bucket list is to get a single day of paid work sometime in his lifetime. To see if it's really as bad as he's heard!

@canefan I recall interviewing a person for a job about 5 or 6 years back, she presented well, came across really well, so we offered her the job.

She turns up for work, full sleeve tattoo on one arm, one coming up from her chest, a lip and nose ring...

none of these were present or visible in the interview.

Turned out she wasnt a good person to hire, but at least she knew she couldnt turn up looking like the dumbarse she was.

Agreed. I'm non tattooed myself, but they are very common these days (and amongst all "classes") - I see from the link @jegga posted that even John Key question Air NZ's stance on them. I guess it always depends on what the tattoo is. But, I guess Air NZ has a dress standard and they're included as part of the dress standard.

it's interesting, because we are having this very discussion at the moment. It's very easy to see both sides, and why organisations choose a blanket rule. if a tattoo is shit/offensive, it probably should be covered. However, who makes that decision? Where is the line?

I don't have a tattoo, but i like quit a lot of the art that is done these days. And in a demographic where a lot of our employees come from, tattoos are more common than not. I just hired a girl in an account role who has a visible one on her forearm, and it didn't change my impression one bit.

Has tattoos ever stopped rugby players from getting contracts in Japan?

The Japanese tourists who do the Waimarama Tours (sneakily taking the chance to plug the hapu business 😉 https://waimaramamaori.co.nz/our-tours/) don't seem to have an issue with tattoos.

My mate got hired for a management role , he had short hair and tidy clothes and created enough of an impression to get the job. Of course his shirt covered the Native American warrior shield he has tattooed on his chest and Arsenal in six inch letters across his back .

I think the point about Air NZ and impressions of overseas travellers is probably bang on .

No, but there's a bunch of baths they can't use unless they cover them up.

Probably has a tramp stamp that reads “ abandon all hope Ye who enter here”.

Actually even then, you're not meant to. The trick is never to ask - only apologize later - after your bath 🙂

Are the baths that popular for non-Japanese?

They should not be, that's cultural appropriation.

    @nepia

Person dependent, but generally, yes. No point in coming if you aren’t planning to get naked with the locals. In Hokkaido we used to drink Chuu-Hais in the bath. I’m sure that’s not cool either, but Niseko is basically Australia anyway.

What? Wonder if I can get a refund on my flights.

@Catogrande Maybe to you English, the rest of us have always had bathing in our culture. 😉

People are asking the wrong question here.

I've no problems with Air NZ stance. It's their company, they are allowed to choose who they employ. As long as they are not being prejudice because of race, sex, sexual orientation, age then I think they have every right to choose.

Tattoo's are just about the norm these days and that's cool. But companies should be allowed to have a no visible tattoo rule for their client facing staff. It's their choice.
