Goat Herder situation similar, but different also given the cover available and being able to move in the day as opposed to B20 and therefore, IMO an additional option available, which I dont think would have been in B20 where speed and stealth was paramount.

It does highlight the help he got from the locals, also shows a number of real images at the end where he has met up with the main guy who sheltered him.

Although B20 was a fark up before they even got on the ground, being compromised just made it worse, although IIRC (been years since I watched it, read it, SOldier 5* and the doco made to debunk some of it) wasnt there some discrepancies around the goat herder side of things?

As I said, this was just my take, and having never been in the situation, cant say how or what I'd do, probably not got off the chopper in the first place

*Chris Ryans "THe one that got away" - worth the read??
-

Finally watched 'The Departed' last night.

I enjoyed it apart from the end which kinda sucked for me.

Jack Nicholsen has to be one of my Top 5 Actors. Few can do cool as cool as he does
-

I love that film, Vera Farmiga never looked hotter than she did in that either.

Check out the stories about the inspiration for Nicholsens character- Whitey Bolger . -

I read Ryan's book and b20 when I was younger and found the one by the guy that got split up with Ryan a few years back. Neither of the two guys who were supposed to be in charge came out of his book well in particular blaming one of the guys who died for most of the problems when he was unable to defend himself .

If you're short of reading material pm me your address and I'll send you up no easy day by Mark Owen, he was one of the seals on the bin laden raid. I'll need it back though my brothers working on the mines and we swap books whenever he's back in nz . -

Here on SBS they're having kung fu month and there is some great stuff going on. I recorded Reign of Assassins on the weekend and finally got to finish watching it tonight. Michelle Yeoh 😠and a bunch of Chinese blokes plus some other little piece of psychotic fluff.
No tits, sorry lads, but a heap of fucking good fights and mystical Chinese flying bullshit

Captain Phillips - I enjoyed this, although like just about every other movie these days, >2 hours!

Tom Hanks was good as usual, although there were a few scenes in this where I could swear I heard Forrest Gump!

It is a pretty sad tale really, while the Pirates are complete fark ups (high on Khat most of the time) you also feel for them because Somalia is a hell hole, and life must be sh!t with very few options.

This happened in 2007 (I think) and was wondering, do these ships have armed people on board now to assist? Having someone on board who could fire off some shots, either in warning or to injure/kill if necessary must surely be worth it in any brazen attacks such as that portrayed in this movie?
-

I'm looking forward to watching this one, though am a bit concerned about finding the "Forrest" southern accent distracting.

It might be interesting to compare it to the Danish movie A Highjacking, which is about a similar story.
-

wasnt the accent, was more cries/yelps/sigh type sounds, and only in a couple of scenes

My understanding is that unless shipping companies put trained armed teams on board with a high likelihood of winning then the risk factor is way to high. All you end up doing is pissing the pirates off and they cause more damage/ cost/ lives taken etc.

The standard procedure is token resistance, surrender, the shipping co pays a ransom and on they all go. Although the piracy is regular, it is also contained by the presence of navy protection through corridors. They seem to know that they can't stop all attacks so go with the flow on the ones that do get through, pay up and move on. Having a ship out of work due to delays from shoot outs costs far more.
-

My Neighbour in London negotiated with these guys on behalf of a Japanese shipping company. I can't remember any good stories though. :-/

The good news was that there were no hijackings off the Horn of Africa last year.

http://qz.com/161704/somali-piracy-was-reduced-to-zero-this-year/

Although when you see how this one was portrayed, having a coupl eof armed/trained persons on board could have prevented it, I guess as time has passed the Pirates have improved thier methods also.

Yeah kidnap/piracy insurance is on the up!
-
I think there was some controversy over Phillips trying to take quicker route for a bonus that took him closer to Somalia and with in their range.

Great film though , apart from the shaky cameras I really enjoy Greengrass films, the pirate in charge stole the show for me though, apparently the director kept the pirates and the crew apart before the filming and the moment when they storm the bridge was the first time they met. The I am the captain line was as lobbed too, hope to see that guy in more films . -

Yeah he was pretty good, as as I said above, you do start feeling a bit sorry for the guy, to him, this is his job, and controlling his nutso crew member...
-

Pirates! Did somebody saw Pirates!? I just watched that Aardman (the Wallace & Gromit crew) clay-animation film from a few years ago, with Hugh Grant & Martin Freeman, etc. It was a blast. Good family fun, looked fabulous, some dumb usage of contemporary songs (ugh) but all-in-all many excellent laughs. Fascinatingly, the villains are Charles Darwin, who connives and sells the last Dodo bird to curry favour with the real heel of the film, Queen Victoria, who wants to eat said Dodo. What a vile and evil bitch! The Elephant Man also makes an appearance. Strange stuff. Loved it! 8/10
