@jegga Ugh. Jess looks like Katie Price, v2, complete with fake tits, and that does nothing for me whatsoever. So I guess Katy Perry.

Mancini, might be his best, theme song from the movie “Charade.” Exquisite.

Not listening to but working my through this, it’s 10 parts and it’s pretty good imho

There’s a few smashing Pumpkins fans here, they are the fourth part

@jegga Cheers for posting these links.

I found the first part to be pretty rambling and was not going to bother with the second until I read the last paragraph about Guns n Roses being discussed in the next part.

Part 2 is a really great read - much more coherent and focused.

@nepia the preamble while waffling sets up the series well imho, it gets better and better after that

Maybe part of why I found it less interesting was the Nirvana focus as I'm not a big Nirvana fan. I just clicked at the end of part 3 that the series was written 8 years ago.

I'm up to 4 and it's fucked my afternoon hard.

I'm finding it amusing the things he uses to bag some artists that he complete ignores Cobain did. Kurt Cobain is the best self-publicist ever, simply by convincing the world he was actually doing to opposite. Genius.

Yeah I was never really a fan either , I’ve worked with a few guys who were born around the time the article starts off and when you get talking about music and concerts you’ve been to they start frothing about Cobain and asking what it was like to be around when Nevermind came out. I can remember the first time I heard it and I didn’t hate it but there were other bands around like Soundgarden that I thought were a lot better.
He nails Pearl Jam though , Vitology is self indulgent crap on a par with Pink Floyd’s the final cut, I completely lost interest in them after that.

to be fair he nails most of them (if a little forgiving of Nirvana, but he obviously loves them, so i am cool with it). I found myself nodding away, especially from about 7 on. I can see why i got in to dance music in the late 90s.

I'd pretty much forgotten about Live till I read this, christ they were awful . There were other bands around at the time on the periphery of the grunge scene like Our lady peace and Mudhoney you had to look reasonably hard to find at record stores . The appeal of Oasis and Radiohead was lost on me, stoked that Thom Yorke hates creep because its the only song I like of his apart from Harrowdown hill.

I never got into dance music.

Without clicking on the links I'll name 10 bands of that era who were better than Nirvana.

Stone Temple Pilots, Faith No More, Chillis, Alice in Chains, Metallica, Rage, Janes Addiction, GnR, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden.

Getting dead sure builds a reputation but in saying all that learning 'Smells like Teen spirit' on the axe got me laid so I guess I have Kurt to thank for that.

@mn5 I should have added that I didn't give a fuck. Smells like brain fluid...

Grunge wasn't my thing in the 1990s but I did like some songs from the other big 3. Of the bands you list AIC, Soundgarden and FNM are my favourites. I've seen all three live in recent years.

I've seen none so I am extremely jealous.
