it was crap even by the standards of the day .

I use to read the comics as well....for the articles of course. Both films were just badly drawn boobs plus some average storyline.

Just watched this, -

Then again, aside from The Avengers I struggle to enjoy superhero movies these days, they're all a bit same-same to me, so maybe I'm not the best poster to be replying to this!

You are banned from talking about Superman films after this comment.

You preferred the movie where they made Superman a creepy stalker, gave him an annoying son, miscast Lois Lane and had a woeful lack of action?

It was more like Dawson's Creek than Superman. Only good part of the film was the plane scene, most likely as it wasny directed by Singer but SFX guys who had read a Superman comic.

Hooroo, MoS was a solid seven. Lost points for having supes kill (he doesn't do that) and the final battle being too long. The original take was treating him like an alien, obvious in hindsight but not normally how he's portrayed.

Well set up for a franchise if they don't screw the pooch with too many characters in the sequel. Afflecks co writer on Argo (fuck yourself) has just taken over head writing duties, so maybe Ben is trying to right the ship? -

Yeah finally saw it on quickflix when I got a free subscription. It was... Interesting... -

Enders Game - HArrison Ford and Ben Kingsley. Sci Fi film about a genius kid who was being recruited to fight a war against an alien race that had tried to colonise earth decades earlier.

Movie was ok, 5.5/10 type of ok, but Ben Kingsley's poor attempt at a Kiwi accent in a film where they didnt need an accent (with his facial tattoos he said his father was a Maori) distracted me from the movie whenever he spoke, seemed more a mish mash of Aussie/SA accent with a bit of Jake the Muss.
-

 In all honesty I don't really remember anything about the previous one, I just remember I actually watched it all the way through without playing stick tennis on my phone (or the equivalent game back then ... snake maybe?)

I expect the next one to be better because it has Batman.
-

Possibly?? But it still sounded wrong, even the English father-in-law said it was annoying and odd sounding.

Not sure how true, but I recall reading how the Kiwi accent was 'developed' by linguists or scholars, rather than naturally formed some time in the 30's or 40's?
-

Did he say bro or cuz frequently? If not, he aint no Maori!
-

I never realised there was such a variance in accents in NZ until I lived overseas.

My kids do have an interesting variations on thiers too; thier mother has a soft English accent, mine, what they hear at school and American cartoons...
-

I enjoyed the film , but realized why afterwards. I read the book first, so all the bits they missed were in my head and I enjoyed the part of the story they did show. Worth getting the book and reading that, it's much, much better.

Kingsley's character was a Maori in the book too.
-

Until I was about 18 and went to uni I assumed everyone spoke with a Maori accent. The more urban accents really threw me off once I got to Otago.

(And until I was about 8 I assumed everybody was a Maori, but tbf there was a shitload of Maori where I was from).
-

Maybe they shoulda just got a Maori (Tem has been looking for work) it annoys me when they cast someone and get them to put on an accent (I know it is the 'big name thing for the part' but I feel it detracts when they do a poor job)

I reckon they coulda got away with him speaking normally, as he says in the movie his father was a Maori, so it could have been assumed he just grew up elsewhere.

I liked the plot of the movie, just didnt quite get there for me.
-

I won't spoil the book, but the movie missed the point of the story.

If it's a good accent, it doesn't matter who the actor is. Look at all the Kiwi/Aussie/English actors doing american accents for example.

Could have been worse;

-

well yeah thats the thing, it it's good and you dont notice the accent...but the first scene I thought it was a SA one, then when I saw the tattoos I realised he was trying a Kiwi one

Myself, and the people I was watching with thought that Jarrett's accent was as bad as Tarantino's - and he's actually Australian.

The Wolf of Wall St has the worst Kiwi accents though - three people speak and they all sound different from each other while not sounding anything like a Kiwi accent.
-

Given the movie, I'd not be surprised if that was intentional?

Am sure plenty of us could ham up a strong Kiwi accent!
-

Yep, that's what I thought at the time ... but it always features in these conversations.

If I want to do a ham Kiwi accent I just do my John Key impersonation. ;)
-

If you want a bad accent, get Cate Blanchett to murder one.
