Hugh Jackman and Kate Winslet were quite good working with a ridiculous prop but other wise it is one of the worst movies I have ever been subjected to. Just horrible.
-

I watched Lone Survivor this afternoon and thought it was bloody good - wasn't rah rah USA like I'd heard.

Those special forces guys, from any nation, are frikken tough buggers.

One thing I thought they could have done:
Tied up the old man and the teen and then gone halfway up the mountain with the boy before setting him free ... it would at least of given them so more breathing room.
-

I watched Lone Survivor (Mark Wahlberg, Emile Hirsch, Eric Bana) last night, pretty decent film, but the fact it is based on a a book which is based on a true story has me in 2 minds, or at least how much was actually true, although a little googling shows they did try to make it as real as possible...?

Also, the title is a bit of a spoiler ;)

ANywhoo, one thing that was odd -
The scene where they had captured the 3 Taliban goat herders, and the options they gave themselves.

1 Kill them - morally wrong

2 Free them

3 Tie them up and leave them - they argued they would probably get attacked by wolves before being found

My immediate thought was you start to leave the location and head towards the extraction point but you march them with you, and once you are able to make contact with base, then you let them go.

They took option 2 and even then (reality vs movie?) they head off at a leisurely pace, and then decide to fall back rather than press on when they realised the mountain was bigger than initially thought.

Obviously I wasnt there, never been in that situation and never will, so easy for me to pick holes in the decision that lead to the tragedy, but the fact they didnt keep going through the night also had me scratching my head, knowing they had released 3 Taliban to go collect an army...?

I guess these kind of failed missions are based on based on a category of poor decisions.

Oh, and the jumping off the cliffs, WTF, good way down hill to try and evade your pursuer.
I thought I remembered someone discussing Lone Survivor previously.

I'm going to have to hunt out the book now - maybe it has more about their decision?
Regarding when they stopped, I was of the belief that they didn't have a hope of getting to the summit (before dark maybe?) and it looked as if it was open from there up so they went back to the treeline as a better defensive position. A couple of times they exclaimed that they couldn't believe how quick the Taliban had made it up the mountain. Having a read on the web and apparently the firefight was heaps longer than implied in the movie.
-

The new 300 movie. Not as good as the first - though that would be hard to do. Plenty of stylised violence and whatnot. Didn't really like the Aussie lead but he got to faux bang Eva Green who got her norks out - though I wasn't as impressed with their form as I thought I'd be. Few other tits in there.

Overall a solid movie - worth seeing at the cinema just for the scale of people getting chopped up and some of the slow mo cinematography
-

I saw the new 300, too. Too much carnage... completely over the top... only two females in the movie... Eva Green stomping around like a sadistic goth vamp... I loved all of it. Even a couple of short intentional funny moments that made me laugh out loud. If it doesn't seem quite as memorable as the first film, it's almost as good, and maybe with a few repeat viewings I might say it's equal. There really were some amazing-looking sequences. 7.5/10

Long and fairly amusing...

Interesting film.
-

Took the mini-mariners to "The Lego Movie" yesterday. It was pretty fucking cool, but i think they were a little young for it. I was pissing myself laughing at stuff they just didn't get. But if you have kids, go to this, you'll love it.

Watched that last "Star Trek" movie last night. It was a bit "meh" really. It looked cool, and some of the action scenes were great, but the story was stupid as fuck.
-

Last Action Hero - an Arnie film which came out at the same time as Jurassic Park in 1993. Jurassic Park won. Still a fun movie to watch if you're killing time on a Wednesday night. 7/10

Transformers: The Movie (1986) - Remember seeing this in the movie theater when I was 4 or 5 years old (my sister had to take me). It is 2005 and a gigantic transformer planet (voiced by Orsen Welles) is eating other transformer planets. A lot of original Autobots and Decepticons met their Tomy maker in the sky and a new leader has to emerge in the Autobots' darkest hour. Smashes the gay stuff put together by Michael Bay and Shia Lebeouf. 9/10.

Also included great bad 80s theme tune.

-

so many likes, that original Transformers movie was fucking sweet.

I had Slag, the triceratops from the Dinobots. Remember being so stoked that he survived the entire film (which turned into a charge of the light brigade for my toys).

i was in the toy shop a couple of months back with the boys, and they had re-released some of the main guys in their original form (not the shitty ones they make now, seriously, the transformer toys now fucking suck, they are needlessly complicated to transform, and they're flimsy as fuck). They had an original-form Soundwave, with all the tapes (i had all the tapes, but not Soundwave, damn stingy parents). It was $150 but i nearly bought it anyway. Soundwave was always my favourite in those cartoons, one kick ass voice

Yup sure did I remember 'blasting' that on tape back in the day
Wasn't a bad movie, certainly one of Arnies silliest tho -

Secret Life of Walter Mitty - entirely average, thought it looked good in the trailers....

I am Soldier - a story about a guy who is trying out for the SAS and some of the stuff he has to go through to get there, aside from the entirely cheesy ending, I thought it was decent.
