Now they've got a handle on this sort of stuff the pace of improvement will be mental... and quite scary!!
See ya later armies of humans in 2 decades??? Just let these things loose!
We're still designing manned fighter jets, so those days are a while off yet.
Do you listen to the war college podcast? There’s lots of work going into unmanned subs and the Russians are using all kinds of drones in Syria .
Also this arsehole
In further evidence that we are fucked
THAT is well-cool!!!!
It is until you imagine yourself as one of the characters in terminator and those things are chasing you.

@machpants that's what they tell us!!

@antipodean I look forward to buying one so it can do my job for me and I can stay home and do other stuff, like posting here...

I'm picturing a sci-fi movie were everyone takes refuge in Eastbourne and those that can't fit have to make a run to the Wairarapa or Palmy.

Very black mirror
From behind that thing ran like Jonah. At least we now know that Nadine sold his brain for the advancement of mankind.

So far, the reporting on the Pentagon’s AI spending spree has largely focused on the prospect of autonomous weapons – Terminator-style killer robots that mow people down without any input from a human operator. This is indeed a frightening near-future scenario, and a global ban on autonomous weaponry of the kind sought by the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots is absolutely essential.
On Friday, the defense department closes the bidding period for one of the biggest technology contracts in its history: the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (Jedi). (I expect this may trigger RS)

@nta was reflecting on this over the week as we dealt with some religious/cultural perspectives. Science is being killed, in the name of catering to people's superstition. And we tolerate this collectively - even our freaking reserve bank is promulgating creation myths that make my head explode.
What worries me is that we are moving past 'I understand this irrational belief is important to you' to 'I'll adopt your belief system wholesale'. Regression... but who knows where it will finish up.
FML I guess. Also frustrating as science underpins damn near all of our major civilisation achievements. If we are going to respond to global warming, it's through science - but I think we are catering far too much to emotions (anti GMO, anti vax, etc).
And don't get me started on the 'wellness' industry. Those assholes seem to exist to paper over the cracks in people's lives, and charge accordingly.

... and then I stumble across this
The harsh reality is that the education system today reinforces class lines rather than blurring them, helping to further widen the lead of those already advantaged by natural talents and family income.
There are some really valid discussions to be had about helping people, but moving from equality of opportunity to equality of outcome has been tried already in a number of places, and didn't work very well. My head just explodes at some point.

Summed up in there I think.
Ironically, the imagery used is from Bora Bora, rather than NZ.

@booboo he's wordy, but interesting. Has written the most convincing case for why our housing prices in Auckland are so insane. Not fun to read, but very convincing, and I'm yet to see it rebutted. Basically a combination of 25+ years of RMA constricting supply, and immigration fuelling demand.
