It was a relief to see all the people in the background struggling with their pullups, just like I do.

Luckily I haven't done Fran yet. Looks awful.

Yep, it really sucks. It's one of those ones that hurts when you stop, forearms and lungs. People refer to Fran Cough a lot as well, and it's a puke friendly workout. It's a terrible, terrible combination.

The first Crossfit workout.
-

I need to get me some of those elastic cords to assist me....still suck at pull ups!

I did Fran a few times now (didn't know it had a name) at home, and very close to vomiting.
-

No, it's the first workout Greg Classman ("Coach") designed. Here's a good video about it;

I'm not sure what my firs workout was, but because I record everything I might be able to work it out.
-

Do negatives - will help a lot. Don't be afraid to cheat into the last couple of reps too.

The main thing, like pushups, is doing them regularly. I can build up to a starting set of 7 or 8 if I'm doing them a couple of times a week, but take a week off and I'm back to 4-5 -

Edit: In truth, I know nothing about Fran, doubt I could complete the workout under 10 minutes, so will keep my sarcasm to myself and butt out of this thread. Carry on, gents.

Can only assume that you made some sort of comment on pullups / kipping etc?

Aware....
-
Its a pretty common criticism of Crossfit. We do different types of pullups to achieve different goals.

We use strict and weighted strict pull ups to build strength. We use kipping and butterfly pull ups to get our chins over the bar.

The kip allows for you that far more times (my ratio of strict to kipping is 10/25). It would take a long time to do 45 strict, and I wouldn't be able to maintain any intensity.

Its the combination of movements that improves the fitness and all that, so standing around looking the bars isn't helping me.

The kip also translates directly into the Oly lifts with the hip thrust.

Also, kipping pull ups are still hard, its not uncommon to have to a 100 of the things in a WOD. It hurts.

He's a purist ;)

Kipping would be far tougher aerobically.

Fran is off limits for me since this split disc in my back, but maybe one day.

Question for Kirwan: in that video the title page had 43/35kg - what is that about?
-

In yesterday morning's class we did clusters of strict pull ups. I really need to work on mine. It's embarrassing. I think I'll look into getting one of those bars for the doorway.

Only problem with those doorway ones is your legs won't be straight for a full hang and makes them feel slightly awkward....unless of course you have high doors in which case, as you were -

Milk, bands help you improve, nothing to be embarrassed about. Start doing pull ups in your warmup maybe?

We usually do class warmups, but I have been adding in extra work at the end that I need to target (core and push ups), so maybe I'll add pull ups into the mix.

Only problem with those doorway ones is your legs won't be straight for a full hang and makes them feel slightly awkward....unless of course you have high doors in which case, as you were ;)

You're right. I don't think they'd be tall enough. Maybe for negatives they'd be ok.

I don't have anywhere to do proper pull ups at moment, which is a nuisance, but the ones I can do I make sure they hurt....

I get so bored with all the anti-crossfit stuff. If people don't like it, they shouldn't do it.

I'm in the best shape of my life following the program, and my two most serious injuries in the last few years have been from jogging and squash.
-

yeah I read both those, like it says, that Simmons chick has some valid points, but at the end of the day, if you don't like it, don't do it.

Same as those hard core cross-fitters who tell you you should be doing it, if you don't do it, don't tell those who do not to.

I don't go to cross-fit, but do cross-fit style workouts (get a great hard workout in a short time) I don't do it against the clock, just do exercises and ensure I do them with as good a technique I can.
