Movie review thread...

Been browsing through a few I borrowed from a friend at work - spoilers ahead.

Centurion - really enjoyed this, having caught only part of it on TV one night. Nice and gritty, Fassbender good as usual, and it displayed some of the actual Roman things (i.e. they're not all white dudes from Rome) that I enjoyed from a historical accuracy point of view. However, I can't completely believe that ambush would have worked. The Romans from Caesar's time took warfare to a whole new level and the activity (or lack of) from their scouts would have been a massive warning, particularly if Dominic West was half the general his men thought.

Red 2 - liked this almost as much as the first, though this one was far more espionage than explosions. Malkovich and Mirren are great value, and Mary Louise-Parker has given her character another dimension. Zeta-Jones is still a fox.

The Book Of Eli - post-apocalyptic religious western? Yeah guess so - reminded me a lot of Mad Max 2. Denzel Washington pretty solid in a movie that used a minimum of dialogue to deliver. You sort of forget that Mila Kunis is starting to collect some serious roles on her resume, and while this isn't necessarily one of them compared to Black Swan, the fact she's holding her own against Washington and Oldman gives you pause to consider her talent.

The Wolverine - was worried about this one after the yawn-fest that was Origins, but this was pretty good I thought.

Warm Bodies - as a self-professed zombie nutter I had to suspend my disbelief for the whole "come back to life" thing. Really interesting premise though, and Hoult and Palmer along with Malkovich did a great job.
-

The Purge - It is 2022 and USA has 1% unemployment and everything is dandy because one night out of the year all citizens are allowed to purge i.e commit mass murder, rape, crimes to get it out of their system. The movie follows one family trying to see out the night in their secured home. The incest queen from GoT plays the wife.

A great idea for a movie but the writers really phoned it in which was a shame. 6/10
-

If Willis can keep Dying Hard then Im sure Gerard can carve out a mildly successful franchise/career by Falling everywhere.

Can I unlike this? Olympus Has Fallen is not even half the movie Die Hard is and Butler has about a 10th of the charisma of Butler (Willis).

Maybe I dislike this movie so much because I paid $18 to go and see it when a fairer value would have been about $3?

I really enjoyed this movie, but then I'm not really a zombie nutter - I prefer the Zombieland, Shaun of the Dead, World War Z types, to the old school zombie flicks.

Palmer makes the movie all the more enjoyable as well ....
-

I, Frankenstein - supernatural action movie, 6.5/10, was decent enough, bit different to other Frankenstein movies, more super-heroish, is based on a graphic novel I think.

Watched 2/3 of "The Lone Ranger" on saturday but turned it off as it was a complete steaming pile of crap.

Watched "Elysium" last night. Had wanted to see it for ages, now wish i hadn't. What a load of crap.
-

Monuments Men: This had bad reviews everywhere but I really enjoyed it. It's a comedy drama and some of the reviews I read took it way too seriously. I'm now reading the book which is interesting.* The one issue I agree with is that it lacked a focuses narrative ... which I think it could have done quite easily by having them work towards one goal ... which they kind of did near the end.

Jack Ryan Shadow something: The latest Jack Ryan movie with the everywhere and overhyped Chris Kline as Jack. I find it odd he's a big star as Gerard Butler would out charisma him just picking his nose rather than shouting "This Is Sparta". Wasn't a bad movie, also had Kenneth Brangah as a russian baddie, Keira Keightly as Jack's girlfriend, and Kevin Costner as his mentor and boss. TBH, a movie based around Costner would have been more interesting.

*I've been reading a few books based on TV and movies lately. Orange is the New Black was a good read. I'm struggling with Lone Survivor because although the guy seems quite bright and well read he comes across as a cliched USA is great war mongerer at times ... whereas in other parts of the book he seems to be a really thoughtful guy. It's a bit weird, and every time he gets gung ho I put the book down and wait until I've got nothing else to read before picking it up again.
-

Pretty sure Brannagh directed Shadow Recruit too??

Yep. I watched it because I just watched the Graham Norton show that had him and Knightly on it the other night.
-

For the Bat-Geeks out there. A sneak peak of the new Batman and Batmobile from the set of Batman v Superman

I watched this last night, was decent enough, don't think Kline pulled it off though, someone like Chris Evans, Butler or Superman woulda worked better IMO.

Nepia, I believe 3 Days to Kill is a movie of similar nature with Costner as the lead...I have it but haven't watched it yet (just over 2 hours)
-

Agree on Chris Evans (actually Butler probably would be better too although I'm not a big fan of his). I've only seen Superman in Superman and didn't think much of that film so I'm unsure how he'd go, he might be too massive.

I've seen 3 Days to Kill, it's not really like Jack Ryan in any way. It's a bit of a mish mash ,,, which is understandable considering that Luc Besson wrote and produced it. It was a decent watch.

Save the Date: Watched it because it had Annie from Community and Lizzy Caplan, it was an indie rom com. It wasn't very good.
-

Bite your tongue, that's a classic cowl. Nice to Batman looking like Batman instead of an amoured motocycle rider.
-

Wrong way round but check out photo 2. That cat has got to get his own movie.
