We got our in Oz. My guess is that it cost about a 10th of the one in the video. The trailer is basic but handles outback tracks and roads, the quality was in the canvas part and bed. The fridge lives in the 4x4 and no built in cooker (although it's all set up that we can add a flasher kitchen)

Much like these http://www.3dogcamping.co.nz/camper-trailers.html
-

For roads, no. I'm currently towing ours with a 2.5 Subaru Outback. No issue at all with pull or handling (or fuel). Can feel the extra weight in the brakes but that's about it.
It usually gets an outing from Welly to Northland each year and side trips to Coromandel. -

Got used to long drives when in Oz. 12 hours just to reach your start point was common. And if you go into the outback from the south and loop out in Queensland the options on getting back to Canberra are either an overnight stop just for the sake of it somewhere north of Sydney or spend that day lying on the beach at Byron Bay then cracking out early for a 12hr drive home. The second option was much more appealing.

Don't find long drives a hassle at all now. Just been down to Invers to watch the boy play rugby and go to the skifields and drove back from Wanaka to Picton in one hit easy.
-

When I was a lad at Uni it was an 850km drive from home, then my parents decided to move to QLD and made it 1250km. Used to knock it off in a day in my beat up Toyota Corona, leaving about 5AM and rocking in around 6PM. These days though I'm old and soft, and start getting tetchy after a couple of hours behind the wheel.

1000km in Australia is a different prospect to 1000km in New Zealand - mostly when you're away from the coast, of course. Cruise control these days makes it even easier.
-

Cruise Control on the Pacific Highway is useless for most of it. No CC in our old GQ either. The best part was looking at the map and drawing a straight line to your destination then ignoring the tarseal if possible.
-

They've completed a fair bit of work on motorways - though some of it seems to drag on forever. But yeah you'd never get more than 100km without some sort of fuckup.

I live in vain hope of ever getting my long-distance trip while work and mortgages and wife and kids get in the fucking way. No sense of adventure these people.
-

If you're interested in survival, then fish by all means. I am of the opinion that life is too short to waste time like that.

As for horses - they're going to be useless in a zombie apocalypse.

I have plenty of other ways to waste time: mostly at work or on the internet, and generally NOT doing what I really want to do because of the shitty, approaching-middle-age existence I am currently nailed to.
-

Yeah like fuck. Wife and I earn about the same, working full time. Need to sort out 12 weeks of school holidays between us (and the mother in law) so taking a holiday together is rare of late. I'm often fencing with the thought that buying this new house was a waste of good money.

But ultimately the wife hates long drives, because she gets bored. She generally doesn't like being behind the wheel for any period, and refuses to use cruise control in any case, so tires herself out.

In other words, while there are obviously reasons we got married, my love of the outdoors wasn't one of them.
-

Further: she considers "camping" to mean "anywhere there is green grass, hot showers, and reasonable access to a hospital". She considers a caravan park acceptable... provided we use an ensuite site, not the common showers...

In fact I don't think I've ever been able to convince her to go camping further than 1km from a sealed road.
