Well that was a pretty solid day. Sri Lanka are a limited team these days, but great to see us continue on from the UAE and put them to the sword.

I'm not a fan of bowling first, but you can get away with it against teams you plan to only bat once agsinst.

Perfect chance for the guys to pad their averages.

Watling continues to make a massive claim though, I suspect he'll leave a huge hole when he retires.

The thing about Watling is he shows the limitations of pure statistics. He makes clutch runs for us, when we need them to save games, or put us back in them. So different to bullying a tired bowling attack when we're already 200 in front (ha ha ha, like that ever used to happen :D)

Haddin did that for Aus for a while as well; rescued them so often. Fark, I hate Haddin

SL lost two guys from their test team, two all time greats in any era let alone a team like that. It's worse for them than us losing KW and Rossco.

So based on that logic we should put them to the sword in this series well and truly......

I love the Black Caps, but I used to joke about how our batters didn't get to play against our bowlers to pad their averages 🙂

A Test Run is a Test Run. Doesn't matter if it's against SL or Bangles or Australia - they all count. Just some make you more of a legend than others. Really enjoying cricket from 11am to 10pm as well. The family may not be, but I sure as shit am 🙂 There's even time to see a Rocket Lab launch live as well. Good times!

She's a good day to be a Black Caps fan.

We seem to have a weird hold on the Lankans, particularly over here. Not sure why, but will take it!

There has never been a better time to support this Test side - ever. These guys are remarkable and winning serious games all over the place

    Hardly surprising really.

3 x top 10 ever bowlers and 2 x top 5 ever batsmen in the same team, and possibly our best ever keeper batsman.

It feels awesome to be confident about our ability!

    Massive call.

The rest sits pretty nicely although are you saying Ross Taylor ( just got a nice fifty ) is only our 5th best ever ? Personally I'd say 3rd....

    But is it?

IMO BJ is out in front with daylight second.

Well it all depends on where you draw the line between Mccullum the keeper/batsman and the batsman solely I guess. I forget lots of his runs were scored when he was in there purely as a specialist.

@booboo I am interested in who the other two Batsmen apart from KW and Crowe who are better than Taylor too....

    Turner. Sutcliffe.

They played for worse teams and didn't get to come in at number 4 behind class like Kane.

Taylor hasn't yet had the end of career blues that ruin the average either.

Who's to say he will have a drop in average though?

I hear ya but he's just gone to second on the all time list, averaging over 46.....I know guys back in the day couldn't compete in terms of getting the amount of tests but he's had a fucken excellent career and was superb even before KW came of age.

Nicholls averaging exactly 40.00 on the dot.

He's also well and truly got rid of the 'oh shit he won't last' jitters that he had early on in his career.

    Fucken well done young fella.

Is hoping for a 50 ball ton from Colin a curse?

Absolutely not. BJ to hold down the other end while he goes nuts? Sounds like a plan to me.

I'd like to see Latham make a new high score at least. And Nicholls get his 50. Perhaps a swashbuckling final session to set up Sri Lanka batting early on Day 4, chasing at least 250 to make us bat again.

True. Could rack that up before tea easily.

@mokey A double hundred is there for Tom if he wants it - he won't get many better opportunities.

A swashbuckling final session could have us more than 350 ahead (if we don't get bowled out) - and maybe still with half an hour to declare before stumps. I think they'll be hoping not to bat again in this test.

@chris-b Yep. Don't think we really want to bat on Day 5 at all. Even if just because travel fatigue/very quick turnaround between tours might start to bite.

Plus it's due to piss down....given the weather here at the moment that's inevitable.

I wonder what Watlings average is when he comes to the crease with us under 150 and is over 300. I reckon he'd have one of the biggest differences in the world.

For whatever reason he really thrives digging us out of holes but isn't as comfortable when we're dominant.

Double century up for Latham. Say what you want about the attack but he has applied himself wonderfully - many quality batsmen played many more tests with similar opportunities and never landed one.
